Has anyone here got and used the Hanwei(sp?) Tactical Wakizashi? I like the way it has a good tough handle.

I have it. Haven't cut anything with it, yet, but I like the way it handles. The grip is surprisingly comfortable.

I have one -- Nice for the price. An interesting contemporary interpretation, i like the longer-than-typical handle for a wak - kind of like the Bussekin swords in that respect. Also 5160 is a good tough steel. The only problem i've had is that if not inserted just so, the tip sticks inside the saya (which is made of some sort of polymer). I'm glad they didn't go with a stainless steel like most contemporary-styled full-exposed-tang Japanese-style swords. I'd reccommend it for someone looking for a good modern-style wak that seems well-built and has a good blade. One thing: i'd like to see a non-bohi (without fuller) version for added heft and strength.

so, to those of you who have owned this blade (i'm waiting on mine to arrive) and one of the Bussekin versions, how do they stack up to each other?

i don't expect that it's equal to them, but with the full tang construction, i'd expect it to be worlds stronger than some of the more traditional types.

Can anyone shed some light on the comparision

A few problems that I've noticed is that the swords don't always come very sharp; I had one that came very sharp, and one that came not so sharp. Also, the saya on both of mine was VERY loose. Otherwise excellent. Balance is great, and these swords move very well. Control, even with a pair of them, is quite good.

if that's the only issue, i think i'll be very happy. Trueswords is telling me they have a person on hand who can polish the edge to a razor hone, so i'm sure it won't be dull when i get it

i know how to tighten the saya (see "Coke bottle saya fix")

My Waki came today... if you folks are looking for a nice beater blade, i have to say that this thing is a BARGAIN at the price they're asking for it.

it's rock solid, razor sharp, and handles MUCH better than i expected.

I can't speak to the long term durability obviously, but i think this thing would put up with a LOT of abuse.

if i have one gripe, it's that the Saya is not TIGHT... the waki will fall out if turned upside down. Fortunately there is an easy fix for this

Yep, there's lots of fixes for the saya. I was lazy and just wrapped some thick clear packing tape around, and it fits snugly now.

It's really quite neat how well it handles. For under 100 shipped, it's definitely a steal. I am glad I got two. The mall ninja in me likes to dual wield, and they're light enough to be good one-hand weapons.

Can you tell me where to get it for less than $100?
Thanks

Not sure if True Swords is a paying member. If not, you should have sent him the link in private as opposed to posting it on the thread.

Can't email you. Leave me a visitor message with where you'd like me to send the link and I'll send it your way. They only ship to the US though.

They posted instructions on their Facebook page a while back, actually. They suggested cutting a rectangular piece of plastic from a soda bottle and super gluing it to the inside of the saya where the mune (spine) would rest. If adding the layer makes the fit TOO tight, gently file it down with a needle file until the fit is nice and snug. They also have noted that they're working on improving their tooling so that this won't be an issue in future.

If you're too cheap or lazy to do that, you can wrap a strip of thick clear packing tape (like the 3M stuff they sell in most stores and at FedEX) around the habaki as well. That won't be too obtrusive, and will hold fairly well until you work yourself up to doing the full fix on the saya.

Methinks I recall seeing a video where a guy used just glue and filed it down...seems like it wouldn't hear the wear resistance of plastic or anything, but would be much easier to maintain...
lemme see if I can find it again.

Yup! Success...here it is.

Ciao, y'all!
Joe
