Erik Markman and I have privilage to make this years custom forum knife for the tactical forum in Germany. We made a design together that has features from both our knives. The design and prototype were approved and we now started making the damascus. Here are some pictures of the progress:
Prototype which has a lower layer count than the final knives will have.
Setup for making 6 meters of damascus steel
Press
Forge
Rolling mill
Forge
Big Blue
Measuring the 75ni8 steel (white color)
Cutting the pieces
75ni8 on the left (2 rows) and 1.2842 on the right.
Stacking the billet, 10 pieces of 1.2842 and 11 of 75ni8.
6 billets ready for welding.
Heating up the billet
After the first weld with the hand held hammer, the second weld is done with either the press or the power hammer.
Drawing out the billet with the rolling mill.
Drawing out the billet with the power hammer.
Drawn out billets.
Cleaning the steel for re-stacking and welding.
6 billets ready for welding resulting in a 210 layered piece of damascus steel.
Next welding and drawing out the final bars, annealing, surface grinding and making the blade templates.
