TAD Gear Titanium Skeleton Key and similar?

The Ti Skeleton Key is a cool little gadget but I agree it'd be really difficult for me to part with $99 to buy one.

You can try and find some of Peter Atwoods stuff, it's probably not going to be much cheaper but I would take an Atwood over the TAD one any day.

Jeez they state right on the site that it is made of titanium and it is softer than stainless steel. Why not make them out of steel and charge $20 bucks or so. And when was the last time you used a bottle opener? $99.00? You've got to be kidding.

And when was the last time you used a bottle opener?

Uh? I used a bottle opener about five minutes ago to open my beer, and I'll probably use it again in about ten minutes. Maybe even repeat that process four or five more times before the night is over.

I use a bottle opener every time I want a beer (I don't know of a beer that I like that comes in a twist off or can).

But, I used the bottle opener on my Victorinox Soldier. I'd never pay $100 for a piece of titanium to open bottles.

it's also a pry bar and screw driver :)
please show me something similar but cheaper, otherwise i'll have to buy this one, and im pretty sure ill feel sorry later :>

Have a look at some of the Atwood stuff here:

If you want to buy from him you need to go to his blog, "plantet pocket tool", it's linked at the top of the page.

In my experience with TAD gear their stuff is over priced and just not what it's touted to be. I have had one of their lifecapusles literally break apart in my hands. I have one of their back packs that fell to bits after about a year of moderate use. I have had problems with the zips and stitching their jackets too. While my experiences with their products are certainly not great my experience with their customer service was even worse.

How about the Gerber Artifact?

It's Chinese made, if that's a problem.

They seem to go for around $10, but a national chain was blowing them out and I got some for about half of that.

There's also the Gerber Shard, for maybe $4.

The Shard actually looks interesting to me. The Artifact, on the other hand, looks like something I really wouldn't want to have open up in my pocket! I carry a Countycomm Pico prybar on my keychain, and it's amazingly useful.

I'm looking to trade up to a stainless Atwood or at least the coated Gerber, since I've had to polish rust off and re-wrap my Countycomm several times in the year or so I've owned it. (I live by the beach.)

Get what you like, but Atwood's tools look to be more useful and finger-friendly than the TAD gear, even if those do look pretty cool.

The Artifact won't come open in your pocket. You would seriously have to abuse it to get it to come open.

If you don't want the Artifact to come open you can put a O ring around the blade holder or just remove it completly also there is a big thread on EDC forums that has Artifact mods.

I don't think the Artifact opening in the pocket will be a problem. It's a liner lock, complete with ball detent.

And it's so brutally difficult to open, I can't even open mine on purpose a large part of the time.

I still think the best bang fo your buck is the Countycomm Widgy Bar. It now comes in multiple sizes and the Pico size is on my keyring. Works well for light duty tasks and doesn't bulk up my pockets.
