Some of you may know that on occasion I am fortunate enough to be able to travel down to Tucson and take forging classes from Tai.

I emailed him last week to chat about the current project we're "working" on (it has been 115 degrees out lately, and my wife is 37 weeks pregnant, so there's zero work happening on my end!). He mentioned that he had just gotten in the copies of his DVD. We had been talking about it on and off since at least February. Naturally I bought a copy. :D

The whole thing is filmed in Tai's outdoor workshop. 3 walls, a roof, an anvil, and a couple forges. And a bunch of hammers! I think I heard a plane fly overhead at one point but it doesn't detract from the viewing experience. It's not exactly HD video but it's good enough for me.

Tai covers the real basics from hot cutting, drawing, etc., to more "advanced basics" like upsetting and twisting (two things I have yet to try myself but will need to for my next project). Tai does it all freehand.

Almost everything is filmed from one camera at a "respectful" distance but there are a few replays where the camera moves in (or was it a second camera?) to a closer distance and at a different angle to catch a subtle point.

Even though I've spent nearly two weeks working directly with Tai, I still learned (and was reminded of) much from this video. Now I'm already nagging him to come out with additional videos. :D I heartily recommend this video if you want to learn "how it's done" the old-fashioned way.

I got my copy a couple of days ago and it's a good video! I hope Tai will do more of them.
