Does anyone know the original blade angle on the Tai Pan? I would like to use some fine stones on it but want to keep the original angle. Also were these make in AUS8 back in the day? I can't see the usual VG1 lines on this blade anywhere.

Factory edge angle is probably going to be somewhere around 25-30*. Best thing to do is coat the edge bevels with a Sharpie, then VERY lightly run the edge over the stone at around 25*, and then see where the marker has been scraped off. If it's scraped off near the apex, then you need to lower your angle a bit, and if it's scraped off near the shoulder (where the edge bevel meets the main bevel of the blade), then you need to increase your angle. And yes, the Tai Pan was made in non-laminated AUS-8 for years.

edit: That would be 25-30* per side, not total angle. Also, I just looked at some of the old catalog PDFs at CS's site, and the Tai Pan made the switch from AUS-8 to San Mai in 2007.
