TAK (D2) or RAT-5 (1095)

It's been FOREVER since I've gotten a new knife and I want your guy's help choosing. (That's a first I think.) This is also my first "serious" fixed blade purchase. Anyway, I'm torn between the TAK and the RAT-5. Before I learned that I didn't have any options, I wanted the RAT-5 with D2 blade, OD scales, and TEK-LOC sheath. (mainly because I like the glass-breaker and the serrated blade spine) I now know if I get it, it has to be 1095 with a cordura sheath.

If I choose the TAK, I lose 1/2" (or is it 1/4") of blade, the serrated spine, and the glass-breaker, but I gain the D2 blade steel. Also, the scales would be black, and the blade would have a large logo laser'd on it which I don't really care for. However, I'd likely put a satin finish on it anyway, and I could add my own serrations to the spine...maybe even a little under the scales.

The RAT-5 does seem to have more room at the finger choil though, and is it just me or does it appear to have more of a clip point blade rather than a drop point? What do you guys think?

I see your dilemma...if it were me I could go either way too. If you think you like the RAT-5 better....don't let 1095 put you off......it's basically the same stuff in Cold Steel, Becker, Marbles ect.,ect. You can get it wicked sharp....quickly...in the field ! Remember a good blade is as much about the heat treat as the steel and edge geometry ( see Cliff, I've been paying attention ! )....and it's gonna get done right in a RAT ! You could always live with the Cordura sheath, and then have a custom kydex with Tec-Lok made later.....it won't break the bank.
Personally.....I could go either way.

Thank man, unfortunately I'm a steel snob / whore and LOVE that Vanadium'ized D2. ;) Called Ontario this AM and they said no D2 in the RAT-5, but to get a hold of the guys at Randall's.

I hear ya....good D2 holds an edge like a $50 bourbon....but don't underestimated 1095......even a child can get it scary sharp.....and bring it right back up there...QUICKLY !....good 1095 is praiseworthy...remember, the finest woodworking tools use carbon steel.

-Cheers

I think you would like the Rat-5 in 1095 just fine. I have a Rat-7 in 1095 and I really love this steel. I can sharpen it quick and easy. It's a real work horse knife.

Mate you can't go wrong with either. I have a TAK in 1095 and have used it very hard for a couple of years. I have reshaped the handle a little and the knife is still going strong. The D2 version, does look a little nicer with the finish, but there is nothing wrong with the 1095. My mate has a RAT5 and is very happy with it.

If you really want D2 go the TAK, but for a little more size and chopping power the RAT5.

I have a Rat-5 in 1095 and a Rat-7 in D2 , When I head out into the bush I always find myself grabbing the 5 . I have really beat the hell out of it this summer, and find it easy to restore the edge with a small stone. On the other hand my 7 in D-2 take a lot longer to sharpen. I find that Ontario heat treat for D-2 maybe a little to hard.

Thanks guys, I guess part of me deal is, I've never really put much thought into the sharpening aspect. This is the #1 comment regarding the D2 / 1095 debate on Randall's RAT forums, but I've just never had enough of a "problem" that I even take sharpening into consideration. Most likely because I've never found myself doing any of it in the field. Just on the workbench with the Sharpmaker.

Anyone know of a cheap (thin) Kydex sheath for the -5 besides the Onscene tactical one for $34? Any of the guys here doing Kydex these days?
