Take a look at what my son did

This started out life as a DDR kit. We bought the titanium thumb stud separately. He picked out the color of the blue/black G-10 and the lanyard. He is also the one that decided how we were going to texture the G-10. If someone hasn't already appropriated the name I think we will call it raindrop pattern. I did do that part since I didn't want him running the power tools. He cut out the handle slabs with a jeweler's saw, screwed the whole thing togther (and helped me drill the handle slabs) and braided the lanyard himself. The bead is a four sided greenman bead from Shmuckatelli.

It's not perfect, but I'm very pleased with the first attempt! I was also pleasantly surprised with the quality of the knife that the kit provided. The fit was quite good, the lockup seems to be solid and everything was nicely machined and went together easily. In hand the knife has a satisfyingly solid feel to it and comes quite sharp right out of the box.

I think our next project will be a fixed blade so he will have his own camp knife, but I would definitely do another of these kits. :)

Thanks guys, I forgot to mention, my son is twelve and we had a lot of fun building this together. I recommend it for Dads out there that want to get their sons interested in knives. :)

That is an outstanding. You'd think that by looking at the knife, that he's done quite a few of these.

Nice job. I like the scales (I'd probably use different size circles to really get the raindrop effect); looks like the texture will really provide some positive grip, especially if they get wet.

Thanks! I have to admit that we did do one of those wooden knife kits previously. We had so much fun with that we thought we would try the real thing. :)

Good-looking knife. I bet you two had fun putting it all together! :)

We sure did, he learned a little bit about tools, a little bit about knives and we got to spend time together. It doesn't get much better than that. Yeah, I'm pretty proud of him... :)

You know that's a really outstanding idea, thanks! Perhaps we will try that on the fixed blade knife kit that I ordered. Of course he may want to try to do something entirely different this time, we will see. :)

Outstanding! Glad you had a fun project together....

That is the bet part, looks great. ;)

Triton, could you pm me a link to where you bought it?
I showed it to my little guy and now he wants to build one.
Many thanks

Wow, that looks great! The scales, in particular, are awesome.

I'm going to look into this, I've built a couple of electric guitars from parts and I think I would enjoy this.

If you have any sort of skill with hand tools then it should be fairly easy for you... and it makes for a very nice finished product. Then you get to post on here and show off what you've been up to. :)
