Everybody here knows that today is Memorial Day. Many of us have off from work and will have some extra time to spend with our families, friends, working around the house, playing with knives, or whatever. That is all great stuff. So, on this day of fun and frolic, I would ask that everyone please take just a few seconds to do something in honor of Memorial Day. :)

Tell a child what Memorial Day means, or say a prayer for the families who live with the loss of a loved one who has fallen and made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Or just raise a glass to those who have died serving in the military, including those who died before we were even born. It takes just a moment to give thanks and remembrance. 'Nuff said.

(Mods: Please move if this is in the wrong place. No harm intended.)

I'll join you for this one, Chris. We owe everything we have to those who gave everything they had. It is an honor to acknowledge them. Thanks to all who have served, or are now serving!

Amen Brother!!! Just got of the phone with my 80 yr old Dad. He is a vet of Korea and Nam. Just happened today is his birthday as well. Lova ya Dad.

Well said Chris

We spent a little time at the lunch table today talking it over with my daughters...

All prayers this weekend for military and their families. Flag is flying high and proud out front. I am a civilian who is very proud of our heroes in the military. I once as an office manager got some flack from some less patriotic workers when I wished them a Happy Memorial Day and to thank the soldiers for their freedoms, and to take a moment to reflect on any who have fallen in service to our country. A couple of the workers complained to the owner. The owner is a veteran, so it went nowhere. I was aghast that they thought my "authority" was over the top for wishing them a pleasant 3 day weekend.

cj65,
That story is disheartening, although everyone has a right to express their opinion even if we don't like it. It's one of the many things that makes this country truly great.

As for my flag, it's up everyday unless some storm is threatening to rip it off the mount.

You've got me to thinking Chris... yeah that could be dangerous, lol.

I'm about to go have a talk with my 14 year old daughter about her grandfather(my dad) that died before she was born.
He was badly wounded in WWII, and was lucky to live. Was in a hospital in france for two months and then two more after being shipped home.

So I've always felt forunate to be here, and its time I talked to my Daughter about my father a bit more.

Thanks Chris !!!

And to all out there that have served this great country may God always be with you. We appreciate all you have given for us, and this country.

Thanks for the good thread. We discuss and appreciate this day openly and proudly in my family. Besides, it's one of the few opportunities I have to say anything positive about my father who served in Vietnam and abroad.

I posted these in another forum but here it is again for the Busse Kin.

A Memorial Day weekend visit to Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois (Near Joliet) 5/24/9

My wifes grandfather was a WWII Hero. He also escaped enemy capture and ran 10 miles or so barefoot through snow with a bayonet stab in the gut. He was blind and mostly deaf by the time I met him. I was never told anything about this until after his funeral where it wasn't mentioned. Seems they were too embarrased by his drinking problem.
These stories/facts should be told.

Good point, OTE... I thank them all, including my grand uncle, Robert Woody who is credited with shooting down 7 German planes in air-to-air combat over Europe during his tour in WWII. I was just reminded of him while talking to my Mom earlier today on the subject of Memorial Day..

God bless them all, and may they rest in peace forever. Thank you for the liberties that we enjoy.

Thank you to everyone that made this day possible. I was working around the house this weekend with some folks helping me. They are from Mexico and don't speak much English. I speak Spanish well enough to hold small conversations with them. They asked me what today's holiday represents, and I was able to tell them what it means to me and how it makes me feel - with pride. I could tell that even though they've only been here a year or so, they too honored the magnitude of Memorial Day.

Sorry I missed this yesterday.

Thank you to those who have, who are, and who will risk their lives to protect the rest of us.

A special thank you to those who paid for our freedom with the ultimate sacrifices.
