I’ve made up a test to help us rate ourselves in a survival situation. I’m sure this test will have its faults as we all do and I am always looking for ways to make improvements.
The following test should apply to a wilderness environment equal to one you frequently visit or that you are most likely to encounter in a survival situation. So here goes.
Write down one corresponding number to the answer that best describes your ability for each question;

Shelter
How well can you provide shelter for yourself?

Sort of got an idea --------- 4
Have read about it --------- 6
Studied it and tried it --------- 8

OK now you’ve finished its time to find out how you went. Add up all the numbers you got for answers.
Now put a percentage sign after it.
Answer =

This could be a chance of survival for you.

Please don’t be too hard on me, it was just a passing idea to break the cycle :)

I'm mostly twos and fours... guess I need to carry some lumber with me? Maybe this is trying to tell me something!

Off to find some reading material on a bunch of subjects... THANKS!

I came up with a 74-percent. Not as good as I had hoped for. I used to spend a lot of time as a youth building snares, shelter building, and all the goodies (Read a lot of survival stuff, including Lofty Wiseman.) I guess I'm a little out of practice.

%50 even. Looks like constellation navigation needs some work, and I should work on transferring my reading into actual practice :D
Interesting thread dartanyon.

Regards,

Shaun.

Dart,

As far as firecraft, what do you consider modern aids? Do you mean matches and a lighter or something like the metal match, ferrocium rod, Gerber Strike Force etc? Thanks for the test.

Take care and God bless,

I was going for a perfect 100 until the plants thing popped up. But remember, the idea is to be able to do 100% and then to make sure you don't have to!

Well ....... I got 60 %

I've read lots but haven't really put it to the test. There have been some great scores... hope I've got a phone and laptop in my survival kit.
Logansan - The test was sort of meant to test us if we don't have that part of your kit that we may rely too heavily on.

I guess that if the test has spooked us into a bit more research and testing then maybe its helped.

I took it once assuming nothing but knowledge and got a 50%. Pretty sad.

However, I took it again, taking into account the stuff that I always have on my person and got a 74%. Still not good, but quite an improvement.

That was an excellent little quiz! It gives me some things to think about and an idea of what areas I should be working on to improve. Thanks!

Comment = Had to teach it in cadets, air signals on the ground, as well as trail markers.

86%... but I've been doing trips to the bush since we moved here from the farm... so my whole life I've been learning slowly.

Generally a good test but the catagories need to be weighted in relationship to their effects on the human body in a survival situation.

Remember that unless is temperature extremes, you can go about two minutes without air.

About two hours without thermal protection. Naturally, this varies greatly upon the climate, wind, wetness, etc.

About two days without water and about two weeks without food.

Again, these estimates will greatly vary in temperature/climate extremes, but seem to be relatively accurate at least in terms of ranking. Accordingly, thes test could be weighted in such a way as having water given much more weight than food.

Also, we need to define "survival." Does this mean the typical 8-48 hours before being recued or does it mean building a colony and bringing forth proginy??

Seriously, good basic isea, just my two cents on refinement.
