Taking a grinding gouge out of a user.

I bought a WW2-era Scout/utility knife a few months back. It snaps like a bear trap, perfect bone, but some lunkhead tried to sharpen the blade with what appears to have been a wheel grinder.

The blade sharpened up nicely, except for this gouge that runs from edge to spine on the pile side. It's small, only about 1/4" wide, but irritating as I tend to use the whole edge for cuts.

Any ideas for either working this gouge out or muting its effect? I'd like to carry this one.

The best way to go is to flatten that whole side so the gouge is removed (BTW I had to look up what "pile side" means ... mostly a British term, I take it?) IMO it just won't look right otherwise.

At least you can rationalize the work a bit, the thinner blade should be just that much better a cutter. :)

It's an older term, and I like it. :)

I just wish I'd known on the auction- the seller shadowed the blade well on the backside. A little time with sandpaper should do, as it's only a 1/16" or so deep.

I like the term, too. With increased vocabulary comes increased knowledge.

IMO the best revenge on the turkey who sold you this knife and didn't disclose the problem is to fix 'er up nice and turn it into a favorite that sees a lot of good use.

BTW, would like to some pics, if possible.
