Can anyone tell me if I will have a problem taking a knife into the Mall of America this holiday weekend?

Thanks,

I've never seen metal detectors in any shopping malls, and if there were, i'm sure you'd have the opportunity to return the knife to your car.

Will you be waving and brandishing it about in a dangerous and menacing manner?

Will you running up and down the escalators with it in a locked and open position?

Will you be dropping it off the top floor down into the open area in the mall or amusment park?

If you can answer yes to any of the above questions, than you will have a problem.

All kidding aside, if you carry it in a nonthreatening fashion and stay away from overly large fixed blades, you should be fine, it's been a few years since I've been out there, but I really don't see a problem.

I believe there are knife stores inside, at least at LL Beans and some of the outdoor stores, You have to be able to carry your purchace out right?

Mall of America was one of the biggest disappointments I've been to.

I thought, "With however many hundreds of stores it has, there's gotta be something interesting." I walked the entire mall. I looked at every store. There was nothing. Almost all of the stores are the exact same national chain stores that you see in your local mall.

There's a Cutlery Store and a Remington store, and I think one of the fantasy stores like Wizards of the Coast also sells swords. Not sure. I haven't been there post-9/11 but I highly doubt you will be searched unless you cause a problem.

When I was 12, my father and I were kicked out of the Edison Mall in Fort Myers Florida. He was carrying a Rambo 3 bowie and I had a W49 Western bowie. People freaked out and told security. The security guards came up to us, harrassed us and told we could not carry these "weapons" on private property. Yes, malls are considered private property.

That same summer, at a picnic, a Ft. Myers rookie cop put us up against his squad car, took away our knives, frisked us, (I was 12 mind you) and called for backup saying that it was illegal to carry weapons so huge in public. My father, a former Ft. Myers cop told this idiot that it was NOT illegal, and that he should check with his superiors before he was proven wrong. The cop told us to shut up. His backup came over to us, a veteran female police officer, he said he was detaining us for carrying illegal weapons and his partner gave him this look, like the "You moron" look. She had to inform her partner that we were not breaking any laws and that open carry of a knife is totally legal. The buffoon apologized to us but never admitted he was wrong.

That's some of my experience trying to legally carry my knives.

I just got back from the MOA a little bit ago carrying my LCC...nobody approached me, I didn't even really think about it until I read this thread...

I don't think there would be any issue if you carried one in, but I would exercise the usual caution before pulling it out in front of everyday people. :)

You wont have a problem at the mall as long as you aren't using your knife inappropriately. I have carried several large folders into the mall and no one has ever said anything to me about them.

I would flatly refuse to shop at a mall or any other store that had a SEARCH of any kind as a prerequisite for entry. That means a pat-down or a metal detector -- anything. Who are they to make me feel like a criminal without probable cause? Who are they to detect and then prohibit ordinary legal items from being carried into the store?

Glad to hear that the MOA does not "search" people for knives.

I did read recently that since MN passed concealed carry, they are going to (if they have not already) post notice barring concealed handguns inside.

The pool of people who obey this rule will, of course, be composed 100% of law-abiding citizens who were never a problem in the first place.

The pool of people who will DISobey this rule will, of course, be composed of both criminals, who won't obey any law they don't wish to, and law-abiding citizens who will not be voluntarily and unilaterally disarmed and made vulnerable to the prior mentioned group, when no safety is to be gained by doing so.

Of all three, I respect the last group most of all. If they pass an asinine rule that they cannot possibly know you're violating, then violate it! Especially where your own potential protection is involved!
