How difficult is it to do this? I plan on taking it apart and do a full clean once its apart. Also, has anyone swaped girps before on a mini? My gf has the Mini grip in the olive drab with a black/serrated and I have the plain ole mini with the plain satin edge. She wants black on black and I want satin on OD grips. Would this be possible?

Thanks for anyone that replies.

Just use proper sized screwdrivers and torx bits, shouldn't be a problem.

Get some Locktite 242 (blue colored medium duty threadlocker in a red bottle or tube) for reassembly. Any Wally-world or auto-parts store should have it.

Switching grip panels shouldn't be a big deal.

Yeap the mini-Griptilians are pretty easy to work on.

Here are complete disassembly instructions for the mini-grip:

  1. Remove the clip. It's held on by three (3) T6 screws, 7/32" long (5.5 mm).
  2. Remove the pivot pin. It consists of one (1) T10 barrel screw (what's the proper name for this fastener?). The cross section of the body of the barrel is not circular, it's got a small asymmetry. A matching asymmetry in its hole in the liner keeps the barrel from turning, so it's easy to unscrew the pivot pin screw. Poke a toothpick into the hole the screw came out of, to force the barrel out. It may help to hold the axis bar back for this operation, and dont put any force on the spine of the blade. NOTE: This will free the blade and washers, so don't cut your friggen thumb off. Slide the blade and washers out.
  3. Observe: The left side of the handle is different from the right. Left scale has only two screws, near the center line. Right scale has 5 screws: two along the center line like on the left scale, plus three along the top of the handle. The screws on the centerline hold the scale to the liner, and the screws along the top hold the two scales together.
  4. Remove the three (3) T6 screws (9/32", 7 mm) along the top of the handle. The axis bar is now the only thing holding the two scales & liners together.
  5. Unscrew the two (2) T6 screws (1/8", 3 mm) holding one of the scales on its liner. Free the scale from the liner by holding the jimping on the liner (top and bottom) with one hand, and gently lifting the pivot end of the liner with the other hand. This exposes the liner, the axis lock, and the stop pin.
  6. Remove scale on other side.
  7. Lift the back end of one omega spring out of its hole in the liner. The spring will still be fixed to the axis bar, so it shouldnt sproing away.
  8. Push up on the bottom of the U in the omega spring to pop it off the axis bar. This is sproing time, so have a good hold. Repeat on other side.
  9. Slide axis bar back to the assembly hole and slide it out of the liners.
  10. Pull top liner up and off.
  11. Remove stop pin.

Re-assembly is left as an exercise for the reader, but it should be straight-forward.

Be careful to not switch the left and right liners - the hand-contact areas have been buffed to take the edges off. You can easily tell which is which by looking at the jimping.

The fiddliest part is getting the blade, washers, and pivot pin barrel to all line up at reassembly. Remember to keep the axis bar out of the way during this step, as it can interfere with the washers on the mini-grip.

Thank You so much, I will try this once I can convince her to allow me to switch handles with her. She seems to have grown a liking for the OD handles.

Do you think it would be possible to just remove the main torx screw and just pop out the blade onboth grips and than swap blades. That way, you get the same results, without taking everything apart?

Well, thank you for all the help guys! I did this and it took all but a few minutes. Now, it looks like a plain ole 556OD but it has the advantage of the 154CM blade!
