I lived in South Africa until 6 weeks ago, I now live in England and want to take my knives (Legally!)into England on my next trip. I have a number of Spydercos......Cold Steels....Gurka Kukris......Japanese Katana.......Applegate Folder......is there anyway that this can be done? I know that I cannot legally carry any of them in England and this is fine!

Please let me know as I will be going to SA and back again within the next 10 days!

My best advice would be to check with HM customs and excise.

But basically if they're in your luggage in the hold and *not* on you/in a carry-on, you should be fine. If you get stopped, calmly explain the situation. You can legally own almost any bladed weapon, with the exception of:

Balisongs/butterfly knives.

Switchblades/auto's

Ballistic knives.

"Concealed" blades - such as a knife inside a pen, or a knife inside a lighter, or whatever.

If you have anything like that on you, you're looking at a few years jail time.

But back to what I said, the only thing you can do is to check with HM customs and excise to be 100% sure. Also checking with the airline you're flying on would be a good idea.

Sounds right. Just put them in your checked luggage as usual. No problem. This will be much safer then postage I'd say. There is a summary of UK knife laws at:

Personally I would not check with HM Customs as it might draw attention. Knives are legal to own and carry "when appropriate" (i.e. using at work, camoing etc). Collecting is an acceptable reason to own most knives.
