Taking my sharpening to the next level.

I started my sharpening education with a Spyderco Sharpmaker. Now that I've become minimally competent with it, I'm starting to think about what else I need.

On the one end I'm think about the DMT Aligner for rebeveling edges and the like. I've got a CRKT M16 that I just haven't been able to do anything with. Even with the diamond rods for the Sharpmaker I haven't been able to get rid of what appears to be a flat spot in the edge. Many, many strokes have done little to improve it's edge. Would the Aligner meet all my needs? I'm thinking free-handing on stones will come later after I learn the ins-and-outs of what makes a good edge.

On the other end of the spectrum, I've ordered one of the stop/compound kits from knivesshipfree.com. I don't have any plans to start convexing my edges at this point. I just wanted a strop set-up to take the good knives to the next level of sharp. I thought based on what I had read here that this would be good for stropping v-grind edges, but everything on the knivesshipfree website talks about using them for convex edges. Did I get the right thing? Or should I have gone another direction for stropping v-grind edges?

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Stropping on leather will not turn your v-grind into a convex, unless you spend the entire holiday season doing it :)

You can get coarser stones that will fit the sharpmaker from www.congresstools.com

If you really want to take it "to the TOP level" invest in an Edge-Pro.

It's really satisfying to have a pocket knife or belt knife that's actually sharper than your barber's straight razor. :p And it's not hard to do with the Edge-Pro.

I highly doubt you're going to get a knife sharper than a straight razor on the Edge Pro.

the edge pro grit numbers are a bit off from other systems, their polishing tapes are very fine. Getting literal razor sharpness is possible.

Perhaps it might not be sharper, but certainly just as sharp! . Easily.

All it takes is some light pressure on the arm, a few extra polishing tapes (mine go to 15,000 grit,) a CrO2 compound-covered strop mounted on an EdgePro blank, and a good quality leather strop mounted on an EdgePro blank.

Go ahead and get the DMT aligner setup. Works great. You can use the Sharpmaker for touch ups time to time, then finish off on the strop.

You can also get Shapton and Chocera stones up to 30,000 grit for the Edge-Pro from:

www.jendeindustries.com

They're more expensive than standard EP stones, of course, but in my experience, well worth it.:thumbup:
