Taking the black coating off Benchmade pivot screw

My custom scales Benchmade has a combination of black and steel color screws and I want them to all be steel color. Will soaking the black pivot screw parts in a solvent like acetone or paint thinner take that black coating off? If that won't, is a wire wheel the next approach?

Same question for the black frame and stand-off screws. Solvent or wire wheel? Or is there an inexpensive source for those Torx screws? Thanks.

I use a dremel and one of the abrasive wheels. I don't remember the part number, though. Works great for taking the black finish off.

I have a Dremel and a bench grinder and could use a wire wheel on either to take off the black coating, but it seems like a chemical approach may be less abrasive. The wire wheel might "add" some texture, particularly to the flat Chicago screw side.

Dremel sanding drums are a really low grit and leave a poor finish. I would just hold the screw and rub it on sandpaper. 600 grit should take it off and will leave a better finish. If not, then 400 followed by 600

I'm referring to the 511E and 512E Finishing Abrasive Buffs, not the sanding drums or the wire wheel.

My mistake. I've tried those, they work. I devised a method you may be interested in. It's a bit cumbersome but worth it to me. I stick double sided carpet tape to the rubber dremel sanding drum (it's the bestbest double sided tape I've found) and cut a strip of my own sandpaper to stick to it. It works great. You just have to leave it overlap very slightly and wrap the paper in the opposite direction of rotation. I use it for a lot of things. If the overlap causing chatter is a concern you can wrapwrap it completely around until it meets the lap, stick tape to the back of that, and press it down. Then everything's of a uniform thickness.

It is Black oxide.

It will laugh at acetone.

wire brush or sandpaper
