What have y'all used to take the clearcoat off of machetes blades? The ones I want to do this on have polymer handles, so it has to be something that won't hurt any kind of plastics used for machete handles. I want to remove the coating all the way back to the handle without affecting the grind lines, which run parallel to the edge. Sanding the coating off near the handle would ruin the grind lines.

I just tried using denatured alcohol and a lot of elbow grease on a small test spot on an Imacasa, and it had no effect at all. I don't think they used a shellac, or it should have done something.

Does anyone else have any suggestions? Does anyone know what Imacasa uses to clearcoat their machetes?

What about your Tram? This is strange. In the last 6 months I bought a Tram and and Imacasa (14" bolo and 14.5" Daga respectlively) used a fair amount of Sharpie getting the bevels even and nice. When attempting to wash off the Sharpie marks using plain old denatured alcohol (not isopropyl or rubbing) the clear coat came off very easily. Was using well soaked paper towel - kinda surprised at how little effort it took. Hmmm....
If that doesn't work, you could try some MEK or acetone. As long as you're careful around the plastic it shouldn't be a problem - keep a rag handy and wipe up any contact ASAP.

Well, I took a leap of faith and slathered it in Soy-Gel for half an hour, and that worked. It didn't do anything noticeable to the handle.
