Taking the HI Cantina off the "new posts" search results - a proposal

The HI moderators propose taking the HI Cantina out of the search results someone sees when they hit the "new posts" button. That search shows the new posts all across bladeforums, and recently it has drawn a lot of new people into the Cantina when they see a controversial thread title. Some of these newcomers may not be familiar with the atmosphere of mutual respect prevalent in the Cantina.

Under this proposal, the main HI forum would still show up in the "new posts" search, so any post about HI knives would still get the same full exposure across bladeforums as it does now. Only the posts in the Cantina subforum would be excluded from the "new posts" search result.

The proposal was discussed by HI moderators and forumites in the thread at http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/846125-The-Cantina . All of the moderators save Yangdu weighed in on that thread. Yangdu responded privately thusly:

I think it's a bad idea to remove an open discussion forum from search results. It limits new people coming in, and since old people leave, the forum will shrivel.

The answer to outsiders with an agenda or an inappropriate topic is more assertive moderation.

It does not seem to be an issue with the regulars if the Cantina posts don't show up in the "new posts" search results, as evidenced from the thread referenced in the original post.

It would be a detriment if we lost the ability to do custom searches of the Cantina posts. Hopefully it is possible to exclude the Cantina from the "new posts" search while retaining the ability to do custom searches of the Cantina content. This is what we are requesting.

The header that was posted above the HI Cantina subforum when it was established says:

The place for the Himalayan Imports Crew to have off topic discussions

The intent was never for the Cantina to be a public platform for anyone with an agenda to push. People have traditionally come to the Cantina through their interest in HI knives. That avenue is still available with this proposal.

I see that a recent post in the HI Cantina is not showing up in the "New Posts" search, so I assume that this proposal is bieng worked.

A bug is that a recent (12:04 pm) post in the main HI forum is not showing up in the "New Posts" search either. We do not want to remove the content of the main HI forum from the search, as the main HI forum is full of knife content and very relevant to BladeForum readers across the board.
