Taking the thumb studs off the Lahar?

I been thinking about removing the thumb studs off of my Lahar. So has anyone tried doing this before? I never use the studs and I really prefer the blades without them (so long as the knife has a flipper) like my Junkyard Dog II.

How would I go about doing this? What tools should I use? Would a dremel be able to cut through the VG-10?

Thanks!

hmmm... it will be interesting to see pictures of the end result. My concern would be what's left. Good luck to you!

Carefully lock a Vice-Grip on each one and twist, counter-clockwise. They should come off. Be careful that the Vice-Grips are off the blade so that it doesn't scratch the blade as you twist them.

The thumbstud is press fitted. You can remove it easily by using a vise with soft jaws: just place an adequately sized nut (threaded, six-sided kind, not almond or cashew :) ) over the stud on one side and close the vise so the thumbstud piece pushes out into the nut. Be aware you may never get it back in however.

Dog is right, the stud is press fitted. Be extremley carefull when doing this!!! wrap the cutting edge in duct tape or something.

Would I be left with a hole in the blade if I removed the studs like that? What about using a dremel to grind down the studs, and then carefully smoothing and polishing it once it gets down close to the blade?

Yes you would be left with a hole in the handle. If you're good with a dremel and don't get the blade to hot so as to not muck up the temper, go for it. Personaly i would remove the stud then do the cutting and polishing, then press the left over back in the blade. Cut it just a knats hair to long then polish and press back in.
