If you consider the qualities involved in making great art it is no wonder it is so rare. From my perspective the most important of these attributes is passion.I was talking with a friend about the young makers at the Blade Show and this quote by Picasso came to my mind.
Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.
The importance of mastering the craft should not be over emphasized but as an artist I have come to realize when it becomes easy you have to be careful and not loose your passion.

Loss of passion , as I have experienced from time to time, is more an economic problem than anything. I have had dozens of ideas that had to be cut short and scaled back due to cost or not having a buyer to back it. That always resulted in a loss of enthusiasm feeling of pointlessness in the final stages. Thinking things like, "well,....here's another knife that didin't need to be made.."

I disagree with Picasso. Not everyone is an artist any more than everyone is a math genius. We all have different talents and gifts.

Talent is cheap, skill is earned and passion takes work.

art is an interestin thing. it only comes to those who can win over there minds insistance of mediocrity. to truley create, you have to let go of your fear of failure and embrace the reality of true wonder.

I don't remember where I stumbled across this quotation, but I like it:);

Genius is childhood, applied.

My grandfather (1881-1965) told me as a kid, "Nothing is impossible IF you are willing to pay the consequences".
