Tali-Whacker first impressions

My TW came today USPS. As I unpacked it, I literally said, "Wow". This is by far the largest knife I've ever owned.

Physically, the knife is almost exactly a larger PD. The blade grinds, edges, and blade shape are almost identical, save for the larger size of the TW. Love the penetrator tip!

I love the Resiprene C handle. I was a little skeptical at first, having fallen in love with the snakeskin nukarta, but the Resiprene is firmer and quite a bit tougher than I expected. I've been putting off ordering a SWKW Howling Rat, because of the handle. Now watch out here I come!

Now the not so good things. The "Tali-Whacker" script on the blade does not look to be quite straight. Not blatently skewed, but a little off. No big deal I guess, as these were probably added after the fact.

Also, there is a nick in the coating on the edge side of the choil, looks to be from rubbing the cardboard sheath during shipping. Not anything I would send it back for, I guess I was hoping for perfection for so much money.

Edit: just wanted to add one more thing I spotted. Looks like where the Talon hole is supposed to be there is a round impression on both sides of the blade. I would assume from the mold, to have been drilled later.

Overall, I like it a lot, but the large blade and collector's status will probably prompt me to either "knife drawer" it, or sell it at some point.

Anybody else have impressions?

Mine just showed up and I am very impressed. I wasn't expecting them to be chunky. That is really a hunk o' steel! They also feel great in the hand. I was planning on using one as a trader/seller, but I think I might keep one in "New" condition, and beat the hell out of the other one! It seems to just be screaming for use. Also, the dog tags are really nice, kind of gave me a chill for a sec. and the hats just flat out ROCK!

Chief,

The logo may seem to be "not straight" because there are no straight lines to follow when engraving. The logo is long and straight whereas the blade is curved along both the spine and the cutting edge. It's kinda like trying to put a straight line on the side of a hula hoop!!! ;)

As for the coating scuff, these blades were military overrun and are often put out in such quantity that occasional over passes when sharpening are not that uncommon. As long as it does not affect the performance of the blade, and it is only cosmetic, we do not get too concerned.

I'm glad to hear you got yours already. . . they have pretty awesome balance. Gotta love that Resiprene C handle also. It's kinda like putting an all-terrain truck tire on your combat knife!!! ;)

If you think this baby is big. . . we're gonna have to hook you up with a Battle Mistress!!!!! ;)

Jerry,

Don't get me wrong, I'm not disappointed at all.

About the logo - I kinda figured. It does line up with part of the
top upsweep.

That explains the coating. Right where the edge would've been ground. Also, not a big deal.

Was my theory right about the talon hole? Just curious.

Thanks, Jerry.

Where is that pesky mailman? He should be here already! :grumpy:

Chief,

I don't know what is on the ricasso that would resemble a talon hole. I'm starting to think that maybe we accidentally shipped our prototype out and you got it!!!!! ;)

Shhhh. . . . .tell no one!!!!

Jerry

Jerry,

It's kinda' hard to see, but here's a pic. Anybody else's have this?

There's a microdot under the coating.

It contains a 10,000 letter acronym that, when solved completely and exactly, is the password to open Jerry's "Cave of Wonders".

It is rumored to contain, among other things, *the* folder, 1/2" INFI in abundance, and maybe even a khukuri. :D

Chief, maybe you could explain what you are meaning. I thought that you were talking about the "nub" where a talon hole would be, if there was one. Looking back, all the pics of this knife are like that. Is there an indention on yours or something? Aren't new knives fun?!:D

Sorry, I haven't elaborated enough. It's really hard to see in the picture, but inside the red ring, is a concentric impression on the nub where the talon hole would go. It almost looks like a guide for the knifemaker to drill the talon hole after the blade was ground???

You almost have to squint to see it. I may try to photoshop the pic so it comes out better.

I'll check mine again, but I am pretty sure that mine are smooth. Thanks for the info. Off topic: We all love the Simpsons at my house. Good user name.

So Chief....I guess you don't want to trade it for an INFI-Coot? :D

Chief,

I can see the dot!!!! What the. . . . . . . ??????? I have no idea what that is. . . If you removed the coating there would not be anything there so it must be in the coating alone. It appears to be a birthmark of sorts. Proof that it came out of the Busse Shop!!! ;)
