I'm thinking about getting this knife. It's the limited edition 3G steel version. I was going to keep this knife in my bug out bag for in the car/travel. It would also go with me when I go camping/backpacking.

I currently have a Swamp Rat RatManDu, a Scrap yard Scrapazachi, and a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 which I use as an EDC. The larger RatManDu and Scrapazachi and too big to keep in my BOB for the car/travel so they stay in my larger pack at home. This is where the F1 would come into play.

What say you Bladeforum members? Have at it.

I would not be able to justify the cost of an F1, just to keep in a BOB. Have you considered a Becker?

It would be in my BOB as well as get used when I go backpacking and camping as a bushcraft knife. The handle of the Becker is what turns me off from it, but it is a good knife. Yes I do know you can purchase different handles.

if you like it and can afford it, buy it.

if not, then not.

you are retarded if you do anything else!

I'd buy the normal version and with the difference take the wife on a nice day trip with a good restaurant...

I have a Fallkniven SK 1 Jarl in 3G and love it. 3G holds a great edge for a lomg time. F1 in 3G is a great choice.

I have two F1's (a Barkniven and a thermorun handled version) in standard VG10 laminate and the Falkie TK3 in 3G. If it is go in a BOB I would recommend against 3G as it really does take longer to sharpen. For wilderness/BOB situations I want something that I can touch-up to really sharp relatively easily - that does not describe 3G.

The VG10 laminate (once you sharpen it past the factory edge which can be slightly brittle) is terrific IMHO. I have D2, A2, CPM 3V, 154CM and other VG10 blades and have nothing but love for the standard VG10 laminate used on the F1. If it were me I'd still seriously consider an F1 (there are very robust and versitile knives) but I'd save the cash and avoid the 3G.

If you do splash the extra cash, as suggested I'd use it a whole bunch more than just for BOB...

Either way I'm sure you'll enjoy an F1.

Cheers,

Ben

i just received a regular F1 today in the mail....great stuff.
terrific fit and finish...sharp and great handle feel.

really generic looking but does exactly what it should be doing.

sheath is tight and overall, it replaced a custom knife i recently sold for a few bucks more...and i like this one better.

Great knife!
I'd buy the VG10 version, personally. But if you can afford the 3G, and think you'll be able to notice the difference, go for it!

I've had the VG-10 version for several years and it lives in my flight bag. It is a great little knife, and I will also carry it once in a while on hikes. It does everything I want, but it is a small knife with 3.8 inch blade, yet it does most anything. Get the VG-10 version.

This is good advice. The F1 from Fallkniven is one of those knives that just hits a home run with knife users. I don't know what it is about the knife, but all of the things that make up the overall package just make it a great knife which many people like a whole lot (myself included). I haven't owned the 3G model, but I have had several of the VG10 models and loved them. I will eventually own another. It's not that difficult to sharpen and it keeps a sharp edge for a long time when used in wood. It's a great knife.

3G is not going to be a problem to sharpen if you can freehand gently with a diamond stone. Fallkniven just happens to provide a good field sharpener . Their DC3 is a 3" stone and DC4 is a 4" stone, diamond on one side for the rough work and ceramic on the other for maintenance or finishing up.

That said, unless it is going to be a very busy, hard use knife, the VG10 will do fine.

I have nothing bad to say about a Fallkniven at all, but if it's going in a BOB/Camping bag I'd just go with a Bark River Bravo 1 personally.

Love my F1, really dig the ergos/handle feel, blade and plain jane design. Though I have limited experience with fixed blades, I like Fallkniven over the ESEE stuff. I would go with the VG10, if I were to go with 3G I would get something nicer like the Fallkniven TK2.

I have the F1 in laminated VG10 with the Bark River handles and it is my go to knife all the time. I recently procured a Ratmandu which will live in my pack when hiking etc, but it's a no contest against the F1. As others have said, get the Lam-VG10 version and use the rest of your cash on other BOB supplies or suchlike.

Hi,
Nice to read that you are satisfied with you F1 knife, it really has great lines.
And the 3G steel is just the best we can produce, and clearly the best I personally ever tested.
Enjoy!

Hello Eric (and Members), I have the same bug bear as thread starter: I want a F13Glm or F13g for utility first bushcraft second, but I am concerned about it being too brittle & chipping- you see I am in Australia where we mainly have very hard-wood trees. I tested the 3G waters with a U4 & was very dissapointed. It chipped whittling a spoon out of only wet, wild cane. Cost/sharpening time doesn't concern me, just want to know if VG10 has a tougher and more torque resistant edge than 3G does, where bushcraft tasks are concerned? NOTE, I have F1 in VG10 & edge is plenty tough down under if respected. So is 3G REALLY for slicing/ hunting as opposed to bushcraft where VG10 is befitting both, but better for bushcraft? Thanks in advance ;-)

I like the F1 so much I have 4 of them, 2 with the factory rubber grips and 2 with custom grips. All of my F1's are VG-10 but I have several other Fallknivens in 3G. With what the 3G F1 costs over and above the VG-10 version I would rather allocate that towards custom grips and sheath. I don't have anything against 3G I just don't think it is worth the $100 additional over VG-10. I'm sure others would disagree and to each his own. Here is one of my F1's
