Talk me into either a Mini Onslaught or a Paramilitary 2

I have found both for close to the same price and I cant decide which to get. My only concern is the *extremely* thin tip on the Mini Onslaught. I dont expect to use it to the point of breaking it but its just slightly discerning. What do you guys think?

I love my PM2. Great ergonomics, super smooth opening, excellent blade shape, just everything about it is perfect.

Go with the para2. Thousands of us can't all be wrong by now...

Seriously, it's an amazing knife, you wot regret it

If you want the upmost in slicing performance, go with the Onslaught. It's MUCH thinner at the edge than the P2 and cuts accordingly. :)

My older full size Spydie Military has never failed me. I vote for the PM2 because I want one too!

if you have the opportunity to handle both i would do so... pick the one that feels best in hand. both are great knives, you cant lose with either choice.

or just buy both :)

I realize that I'll eventually get both, the hard part is which first! Later today I'm going to handle them and see which I like more in the hand. I would switch it out in a rotation with my BM 943 and plan to use this next one for slightly rougher cutting (Cardboard, extended periods of cutting ETC.) All-in-all something to scratch the itch for a new knife and a bit more comfortable for long cutting.

If you will eventually get both, then start out with the onslaught which might get canceled later on as BM likes to switch up their models quite often. The PM2 will be around for awhile and if you wait you can get it in whatever the newest sprint run super steel is :

I owned the Mini-Onslaught for about 4 days. It was a huge disappointment. Coincidentally, if it were me and I wanted something similar to the Mini-Onslaught, I'd be looking at the Spyderco Perrin PPT, but out of all 3, my recommendation is the PM2 all day long and twice on Sunday...

I hated the ergos on the mini onslaught..... only one hand position too far back the handle. The PM2 has 2 positions, normal/strong grip and choked up into the choil of the blade, much better. IMO

you can choke up high on the handle on the mini onslaught as well. its quite comfortable even though it wasnt designed as an actual choil like on the pm2.

I would never choke up on the Mini Onslaught if I was using it for any kind of serious cutting (i.e. using a sawing motion on rope, or for that matter, even stabbing through something as thin as cardboard). There's nothing keeping your front fingers from sliding onto that edge and after going all the way to the tip of the blade, mildly cutting yourself on what appears to be a dull butter-knife :)

ummmmmm why would you want to choke up on a knife to saw or stab? thats just silly my friend. isnt the point of choking up to have more control over the blade for push cutting or finer more controlled work? maybe we're not talking about the same tool :). at any rate, ive used plenty knives without and without choils (hell most choils dont provide any kind of real protection against slipping to the cutting edge besides maybe jimping) and as long as the meat of your fingers are clear from the cutting edge ive never cut myself doing any normal suited cutting task. its just like using a paring knife is it not?

edit: im not saying the mini onslaught has a superior choil or any choil, just saying it works alowing you to choke up and have 2 grip position like the para 2. just something to consider...

I can choke up on the Para-2 and do any of those things without fear of slipping forward on the blade's edge. I've cut smaller rope that required a stroke or two and was easily able to do it with the PM2 in choked-up position without issue. I've also stabbed into fruit, cardboard, and even stabbed/sawed raw poultry (getting around bones requires intricate control) all while choked up on my PM2.

The Choil/thumb-ramp allow me to do that easily without slipping forward on the blade. I'm just saying, I wouldn't do any of those things with a knife that was slick and had no real thumb-ramp/choil/jimping.

understood and respected but your opinion is just as subjective as mine.
interesting utilization of a knifes choil and it sounds like your knives arent sharp enough if you have to saw through raw poultry :)

Agreed on the opinion being subjective. I wasn't saying you were wrong, but I just won't personally choke up on a knife that has a handle as slick as the Onslaught's (and no choil) for anything more than maybe pealing an apple (and I'd be weary of that if I got any of the juice on the handle while doing so). Ironically, my opinion is partially based on the Caly 3's shallow choil. My finger slipped forward of that choil one time and it could have been worse, but the cut was bad enough that I sold the knife.

And yeah, with S30V - when you use 'em, they don't stay uber-sharp for long and I am guilty of only touching them up every few days or once a week, so my workhorse could stand to be sharpened more often. I've ordered a Wicked Edge though, so that will hopefully be remedied in a few weeks :D
