Talk me into getting a 112 with finger grooves

I recently purchased my first Bucks', a 110 and a 112. I planned to budget in two more 110's this month, and am debating using the left over I have for either a finger grooved 112 or a 500 Duke.

The reason why I want to get the finger grooved 112, is that the 112 I recently purchased doesn't want to leave my belt... but I wonder if the finger groove model will feel even better. Anyone have experience with the finger grooved version? I have slender fingers, but they fit a large glove. Is there any worry about Buck discontinuing the 500 anytime soon?

I can't help you too much Scott because I never got a 112 with finger grooves even though I've always really wanted one. I did recently get a 500 and I wish I got the 112 fg instead. The 500 just doesn't click with me. I'm a huge fan of the 501 so I thought the Duke would be an instant favorite. I love 110's with finger grooves and should have gotten the little brother. Even if the 500 is discontinued, I'm sure there will be plenty of stock floating around so you wouldn't be pressed to get one.

And thanks for bringing this topic up cause now I have to find a way to get a 112 with the grooves now ;)

I'm glad I tried a FG 112 at a store. I didn't like it as well as the standard. I didn't expect that. I do.like FG on the 110 a lot. Every hand is different. The 500 is a good knife. A sleeper. A hidden gem. I expect it to stay around a long time. Knock on wood...

i like the finger grooved 110s, and i have a finger grooved 112, but the grooves dont really fit my hand. it doesnt make using the knife uncomfortable or awkard though weirdly. you really need to hold one first if possible, to know if you prefer it on a 112 or not.

I love my finger grooved 112. Im tall with long fingers and can wear x large gloves although sometimes large fit ok. They are great knives, you should definitely give one a try imho.

I love my 112FG, and plan on getting at least one more. I have long skinny fingers as well, that fit size L gloves. The grooves sit pretty perfectly in my hands and in between my fingers. Try one! You won't regret it. If you do, post it up and I'm sure one of us will pick it up from you.:thumbsup:

I have a few 110s and 112s, with finger grooves. When I recover from my recent spending spree I will get a 500 with finger grooves. For me, FGs add to the purchase I get on the knife, aid in the orientation and I like the looks.

The 112 I posted a photo, of in this thread http://www.bladeforums.com/threads/buck-422-bucklite-year-1.1510488/ is my go to 112 for carry. It's the last one in the photo below.

This photo shows a difference in the size/style of FGs. The 110 and 112, that are third and fourth are the stock, modern style. First, second and last are the narrower, earlier style that I had Leroy Remer, a former Buck employee put on for me...it's what I prefer. Preston

Scott, I like a my 500's blade shape more than a clip point, so I carry it more than a std. 112. Buck is not going to discontinue it. It is a thinner
profiled handle. Good for slicing a apple and such. You should handle a 112 with finger grooves at a cutlery store. They are hard to find at a gun show. Good luck in your search toward a comfortable handling knife. DM

Come on.......it's easy.

The reason to get one is because they're beautiful.

I think VP is correct. For me, FGs are more aesthetical, than functional. They don't seem to enhance the grip in anyway over the standard handle. If anything, they make the grip smaller by removing handle material.

I think this is one of those issues where your personal experience will trump advice. Finger grooves are a fit issue, and like shoes, what works for me might not work for you.

I find that finger grooves ruin a knife for me. This should mean next to nothing to you.

Agreed

Just an update. I purchased a factory 112 with finger grooves to see 1. if I preferred the finger grooves and 2. if I preferred the clip point to the drop point on my C&C 112.

I like to give any potential EDC knife a week or so on my belt or in my pocket before deciding to include it in my rotation. Initial impressions of the finger grooves is that for light tasks in saber grip, palm reinforced grip, etc I feel a tiny bit more controlled due to the tactile feedback of the grooves.

However, for hard hammer grip cuts, I feel slightly less control because the handle is less hand filling, and the FG's emphasizes the small grip of the 112. So there's a give and take depending on my task. These are just my initial impressions, and might differ from others.

As a side note, I also picked up the S30V aluminum bolstered DP 110 from C&C, and the DLT S30V DP exclusive 110 (brass version). The aluminum drop point won its place for my pocket for the next few weeks, so my new FG 112 will have to wait before it sees pocket time.

If anyone is on the fence because of the red Micarta, it looks more subdued than on C&C's website. I will post pictures later when the sun is out.

An interesting side note Scott321. Nice choices! Thanks for the color description of the Red Micarta too. I need to go shopping now.

:)

Buck's 112FG is probably my favorite lock blade. The finger grooves tend to fit my hands like a glove. I have a couple and generally have one on my belt.

Here's a pic, but it's in lower light as I didn't get out until late this afternoon. The handles appear more red under "soft white" bulbs, but more maroon in daylight.

I like the contrast between the steel blade and aluminum bolsters too. That's a sweet looking knife. Nice pic

Glad to see you've made your choice, and now I'd like to comment.

I have found the best way for me to decide what to get is to handle the knife first. I did that for my first 110 (no FG) purchase, but didn't do that for my first 112 (with FG). I found that the FG didn't feel good-in-hand, and almost made bearing down on the blade a little awkward. Handling the 110 was excellent. That's my experience -- with FG and without FG. My brother has now "inherited" my 112FG, and he likes it a lot, uses it regularly.

I'm deciding exactly what features I want on another 112, and probably this weekend will order a Buck Custom-built 112 with no FG. I plan to have this Buck engraved as a gift to myself to remember my dear wife, who passed away last month. So I'm working on the blade engraving to display initials of our fun nicknames for each other, and an acronym remembering our marriage motto. The bolster engraving will display our years/span of marriage. The Buck Custom program shows a really nice-looking Buck as I'm designing it. I'm looking forward to getting this 112. I don't plan to use it, and hope to find a quality glass-topped case to display it.

This was an interesting thread you started. Hope you really enjoy your new 112!

Thank you all for your replies. 112 w/FG ordered. :D
