Talk me into, or out of, getting an Umfaan or a large Sebbie

I'm going to the C&E gun/knife show in Charlotte in a few weeks and I'm taking some of our tax return money to buy a knife or two. I know one dealer has had Umfaans for sale at the last few shows but I just couldn't convince myself to get one due to the lack of a clip. However, I know they're getting scarce and I'm afraid I'll kick myself later if I don't get one while I can. I've already got a small regular Sebbie and an Mnandi so those bases are covered. So it's either an Umfaan or a large Sebbie. What do you guys say?

Hi Trane. First things first. When is the show as I would like to come down and maybe meet up with you. Second.... you KNOW what I would say, LARGE CLASSIC SEBBIE w/wood inlays. Comes in under $500.00 with enough left over for a nice supper. Heck you can take me out! ;) Realistically, the large sebbie in any form is probably going to be around for quite awhile and if the Umfaan is not, then.............UMFAAN! The boys from S.C., big table as soon as you go through the front door, usually have several CRK products. I've purchased several from them and they are great guys. E-mail or PM me and maybe we can catch up at the show!

BTW, one is a fish? Had be rolling on the floor!!!

How about the Umfaan and having someone make you a clip pouch for your pocket??

You can buy a WH pouch for that, and i think that Allan Elisiwitz also sell this type of pouch on his web site.

artsig, you saved me on that one. I would have guessed a WH clippouch, but wasnt sure.

I just remembered another reason I have held off purchasing an Umfaan. It is the expectation, based on rumors, that a redesigned Umfaan is in the works. Does anyone know if this is actually going to come to fruition and if so, is there any word as the time frame?

I would get the Umfaan. You can always pick up or order from CRK a large Sebenza. Not so with the Umfaan. The way I read it, the redesigned Umfaan is on the backburner at CRK and I wouldn't expect it to be available for at least a year if not longer. I have no proof of this but that is how I read the situation based on what people say about what Mr. Reeve intends to do. When CRK says something is on the backburner, I think that it's a nice way of saying that you won't be seeing it for a while. I might be wrong but I think that the Mnandi has taken the place of the Umfaan.

Get the Umfaan. Fantastic little knife. You can always pick up a large Sebbie another time.
Someone stated that Chris said the Umfaan re-design will happen, but it's going to be awhile.

Any idea what the blade design will be for the new Umfaan? I'd really like to see a Wharncliffe style but I don't know if that is possible.

I've been toying with the idea of getting an Umfaan, then having the clip from either a Gerber Mini-paraframe, or a BM 770 put on it....

Of course you have to find one, then you have to have the money.... :D

I dunno, the Umfaan just doesn't do anything for me. It's just too small. My favorite small knife is the Mnandi, and the Umfaan is substantially smaller than that. So, personally, I'd get the large Sebbie. That's just my personal taste, of course, and ymmv.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like I'll be picking up an Umfaan assuming one is available. :D :D

Well, don't know if you've found one yet, but I'd suggest a Large Sebenza carried via the clip and the Mnandi on your belt in a small sheath, a good combo I'd say, since you've got the Mnandi already.

I just received a large wood inlay classic Sebenza and to go along with that is my Case stag handled wharncliff slip joint that I carry in a small sheath, great for those small chores while the large Sebenza can be there for more challenging/larger chores...I've had many many Sebenza's, a Mnandi and an Umfaan, the Umfaan is fairly a smallish knife, too small for me but still a nice knife.

:(
Here is a scan of some of the Sebenza's I owned, these are all gone and there are several missing from this scan, now I'm down to this large classic wood inlay that I just got, she's a little marked up but still a sweet knife, hopefully a keeper! ;)

Now a Wharncliff Umfaan size? GREAT SIGN ME UP! ;)

edited to add the new wood inlay, I THINK it has a BG42 blade, as I took it apart to reverse the screws, makes it look sleeker to me ;), and there wasn't an S on the blade's tang...anyone know for sure when the wood inlay's started coming out with S30v blades?

Now you're talking. I've stated in a couple of earlier threads that I would love and I mean LOVE to see an Umfaan w/a Wharncliffe blade. I am hoping that the new Umfaan, whenever it comes out, will have such a blade either as a standard design or as an option or limited run. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. :D :D

Off hand, I'd say get the Umfaan. They've discontinued it and surely the next incarnation of the knife is going to be completely different from the last. Therefore, you have some collectability in it. I wouldn't carry one for fear of losing it (I couldn't believe how small it was when I first saw it), but if I were certain that I wanted something from the Reeve line, it would be the one thing not everyone can get. Hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Anthony

I had an Umfaan; great little knife but too small for EDC for me...
I'd like to try out a Mnandi, so I guess my vote goes for a large woodie. I just got one with African Blackwood, gorgeous knife! :D

Bobby B, you should definitely get an Mnandi. As I said earlier I have one and really love it. It is my work hours EDC. It's a very elegant knife yet strong design. I like the configuration/appearance of the clip as well. It allows for very discreet carry given that it looks like I'm carrying an ink pen. Try one out you won't be sorry.
