My mom has a horse. He's a big fella too (I don't remember how many hands high). He's a good horse and gets the attention he needs at the stable, but I was thinking about getting her a knife that would be a good tool out in the field. I'm thinking about a SAK equestrian, SAK Farmer, a Case Equestrian.... or maybe some stockman with a punch.

Thoughts? Other ideas?

Look at a GEC with a hoof pick.

My family has had horses for over 40 years.

I asked my mother (I am not expert)

She says a blacksmith/farrier does the real work.

A hoof pick she described being used if the horse gets something lodged like a stone or the like.

For a horse pent up in a stall she says you should clean them out daily to prevent hoof rot and a few other reasons.

I hope this helps.

Your desperation got me to call my mom.... HA!

You could ask her how often she has needed a leather punch vs hoof pick out in the field.
