Talk to me about the Calypso.

Hey, Spyderbros.

I made a thread a while ago asking you guys about which Spyderco knife I should get. I said I would get the Manix 2 lightweight. I still stand by that, but...

I also want a Calypso.

The brown sprint run. You know which one I'm talking about. There are a lot of things I don't care for. No jimping. Small round hole. Price is kinda high for VG-10. No bushings or washers. And yet, this knife calls to me, more than any other folder. I want one, my friends, and I would like to ask you about it. What can you tell me about it, that isn't on Spyderco's website?

I bought one; I don't like it. It is a beautifully-made knife (F&F are great) but the ergonomics don't work for me. After carrying Enduras for a while, not having jimping on the thumb-ramp is noticeable. Also, the SpyderHole feels VERY small; I'm sure it would be difficult to open this knife with a gloved-hand. The action is stiffer than my FRN-handled knives, although it may loosen-up in time. IMO, it's more of a collector knife than an EDC.

I've got a brown Calypso. It's a fantastic knife, in my estimation. The jimping issue really doesn't matter a whole lot to me -- I wouldn't mind if it was there, but don't really miss it. I think that the ergonomics are spot on except that the edges of the liners could benefit from a hit on some fine sandpaper to take the edge off.. but I'm too lazy to do it, so it isn't a huge deal. It carries very well due to its slimness and hugs close to the body -- even at a 5" closed length, it's very comfortable either in pocket or clipped inside-the-waistband

The Spydie hole is smaller than usual and requires a moment of adjustment but it is still very easy to open and, in my opinion, very worth it for the sleek, lithe blade profile. My buddy really enjoys 'flicking' the Calypso, and while I'm not much of a 'flicker' anyways, I definitely think that it is much better suited for a deliberate opening. Just a thought in case you're into that sort of thing.

Overall, it's a great example of quality Spyderco. Due to its size and thickness, it's not a very practical or useful knife for my needs, but I love it and carry it all the same.

I think jimping is overrated and in a lot of cases of late, overdone. Ditto the huge Spyderholes. I like the relatively narrow blade of the Calypso. I love that they didn't try to turn it into a Manix for the sprint. Granted, the liners did add a bunch of weight to the package, but at least they kept the thickness down and retained the thin grind that made the original such a wicked cutter. Pricey? Maybe, but that's what happens when you do a bunch of new tooling for a sprint run. Something people around here never seem to remember when they're posting about their dream knives.

I recently acquired the brown sprint run Calypso. It's almost too big. Almost. But I'm used to my Caly 3.

So far this is a really great and helpful thread. I'm really pumped up to buy one of these, and am looking forward to all of your opinions. :)
Thanks, everyone.

I love the looks of this one.
Nice thin rounded spine, looks very elegant when folded up.
Mine gets mostly used in my kitchen. It's a great slicer.
Cheers

The caly line is hands down my favorite spyderco line. The brown caly is on the larger side, but being that its so thin it carries with ease. Love mine and would never get rid of it.

I want one of those brown ones. I keep putting it off, there's so many Spydercos!

Get it, there are no questions.
The whole profile is super thin and the lock kicks in with much happiness.
The only downside for me is the pinned construction, but I guess that is part of the package.

Get it! I carried mine all day today and hardy noticed it. Great fit and finish and easy to use and carry

Nailed it!

Love mine. I prefer thinner blades for my tasks as they are typically light. The Calypso is a cutter and it fits my mit perfect. Next to the thin edge, 2nd favorite thing about the calypso is the thickness/profile of a knife so large. In the summer time I like wearing slacker shorts without a belt and often waistband my blades. This one goes totally unnoticed. Also has great action. A version with ZDP and that new style carbon fiber on the lums would be the total sickness.

(those arent bandages from cutting myself btw, there to minimize tip mangling from sheath making in the cold winter)

I finally bought one about 2 months ago. I got a package deal, and ended up buying a CF ZDP 3.5 too. The newer Calypso sprint is amazingly nice. I love mine, and it definitely fits into the large gents folder catagory, but it can and will do some serious work if needed. I would gladly buy a couple of the ZDP versions this size.

I tried to convince myself that I didn't need a Calypso, I really did. I failed.

Mine is on the way! I'll post pics once I receive it.

Nice Caly collection there, Jack!

I'm a Caly Jr. person myself. Absolutely love them. I've given away five or ten of them for gifts (not in the past couple of years, though).

I'm waiting on the rumored sprint run Caly Jr. I hope it is still in the production queue somewhere! Sal, can you give us an update?
