I remember seeing the Buck Nighthawk for sale at Walmart for years.

I always passed them up in favor of other knives, whether another Buck like the 119, or a different companies blades.

Recently I have gotten the urge to own one of them.

From the research I've done it seems there were multiple versions.

I have come across all black, black and green, and black and gray if memory serves. Fine edge and 50/50 serrations versions too. I think I found two different sizes as well

What can you tell me about this model to educate me on the history of the knife? What should I know before scouring the web looking for one on the second hand market?

Thanks all in advance!

We were developing the NH for the Seals. There were other knife companies interested in the same contract and we got beat out. If I remember right, it was on price, not quality or function. (Al least that is the way i want to remember it :) )
We still went into production on it for the commercial market and it was pretty sucessful. We eventually thinned out the edge some because most folks did not want the very thick edge. That edge was a specific requirement of the Seals as I remember it.

Search for an old post Purpose of the Buck Nighthawk?

Don’t know much about their history - I’m in the same boat as you. I saw them at Walmart for years and always wanted one; just never pulled the trigger. Carried an Intrepid for 6 years on active duty. Finally came to my senses after watching an absolutely ridiculous destruction test on YouTube. I RAN to eBay and searched till I found one in good shape for a decent price. So glad I did! I ended up buying another one a few years later. I prefer the original style, not the TOPS collaboration.
