My question concerns the Mini Talon, TAL2, or Talon 2, although I would also like to know if the answer would be the same for the Talon.
I was considering the use of my Mini Talon as a neck knife, when at the same time I have a compass hanging from my neck, perhaps from the same cord or non-ferous chain (e.g. sterling silver ball chain). Since the Talonite® will not attract a magnet, it should have no effect on my compass needle. Similarly the hollow rivets on the sheath appear to be brass and nonmagnetic, so they should have not effect.
What are the handle fasteners made of? Will they attract a magnet? Can they corrode?
If I do use the knife and compass around my neck at the same time, I will need to remove the stainless ball chain from the parachute cord. Any suggestions as to how to fasten it, without compromising the safety of my knife? In other words, I do not want to chance losing my knife. Perhaps one end of the hollow cord could be inserted into the other and sewn together, although this would be a waste of time unless it is always left that way.
I have considered a small knot on each end which would keep it from slipping though the hollow rivets of the sheath. I have tried this and it works fine, although it presumably leaves my neck at risk if the parachute cord gets caught on something. If tucked into a shirt, the risk would be small, however, I see white water rafters warn against neck knives due to the risk of the cord getting caught in a strainer. (Thanks to Kids Outdoors I know a strainer is a tree or trees that have fallen into the river with the branches acting as strainers.)
I have seen the suggestion, to insert one end in the other and heat them to fuse them together, yet be safe as the join would fail under stress. I am concerned about it unexpectedly failing and losing my knife. I have not tried this.
