Talonite S.P.O.T.?

I asked about this a few months back. Figured it was time to bring it up again...

Is there any chance that we might see a S.P.O.T. in Talonite? I realize that it would have to be a small run, but there must be enough knuts here to justify it.

I love mine. Unfortunately, my sweat attacks the steel with way too much enthusiasm. I have cleaned it up, wiped it with a marine tuff-cloth, worn it for a day, and found nasty stains by that evening. Argh!

I think it makes a nifty belt knife too, but I would really like one that I could wear as a necker.

I've had another strange thought too... If a limited run isn't likely, is there any way I could get a one-off custom? Do the folks who make prototypes for Spyderco ever do that kind of work?

Thanks!

Hi Bob. We probably wouldn't do a run in Talonite. Rob Simonich could probably make you a custom one.

H-1 might be a possibility.

We did a run of black SPOTs. They are more corrosion resistant, but I don't know how they'd hold up for you. Why don't you send yours back to me for testing and we'll trade you out. Then you can report. Some people have excessively corrosive perspiration. Might be a good test for us.

calyth: Mine is the PE Micarta version in VG-10. I know that AUS-6 is more resistant to rust, but I have had problems with that too in the past. :(

Sal: Rob's web site says that he isn't taking custom orders right now. On the other hand, if you don't object to someone producing a one-off of the design I suspect I can find someone willing to do it. I appreciate your generosity!

I hadn't thought about H-1, but that does sound like a promising alternative. I've been following the discussions about it. If it can stand up to salt water, take a decent edge, and come in at a reasonable price it seems like the perfect choice for a neck knife.

I will see if I can get ahold of one of the black SPOTs. A coating would certainly improve the situation, even if I did still have to keep an eye on the edge itself. Any idea where I should look for one of those?

And, as it happens, you already have my SPOT to examine. I finally started having sheath problems, so I sent it in to Mike in mid-June. I had cleaned it up before sending it, so I'm not sure how much you'll be able to tell from it. (The stains always came off with polishing paste; it's just unnerving to see black areas on an otherwise shiny blade after six or eight hours of wear.)

BTW--I still don't have the replacement for for my SPOT. I was accidentally sent a plain SPOT and returned that. Now I guess I'm waiting for the Micarta SPOTs to come off backorder and start shipping again. Any idea when more will be available?

Thanks for all the help!

Hi Bob. Just spoke with Mike. We'll get a black serrated version for you.

You'll need to let me know what happens with it.

Also, we've found that VG-10 resists corrosion better than AUS steels.

I see that you're ahead of the game, as usual. :) Mike called me after you spoke with him and I think he answered all of my questions. I look forward to acting as a "test bed" for one of the coated SPOTs.

Still hope to see a SPOT in H-1 or Talonite someday...

Thanks!
