I'm thinking about buying/commissioning a fixed blade to carry IWB as I'm planning to get a handgun and CCW permit in the hopefully-not-to-distant future. In Arizona, the CCW permit extends beyond handguns to "other" weapons as well, including knives that might be questionably legally concealed. In Arizona, it's also hot, and I don't want to have to worry about rusting a knife up with sweat. I've carried a VG-10 folder IWB and even with only an hours worth of vigorous excersize (riding a bike), rust spots will form.

I know that, properly maintained, any stainless steel should keep well enough, but I'd rather not have to worry about it every single day. Which leads me to true rust-proof metals like Talonite, Stellite 6K, or even H1 or X15 TN. But I'm really not aware of any knifemakers still using Talonite to large degrees, and I'm unaware of anybody at all making customs out of H1 or X15. I know there's the Benchmade 100SH20, but that's not really the kind of knife I'm looking for.

I would like the knife to be equally useable for utility or self defense, which rules out titanium. I don't need it for chopping, so I'm not too worried about the lower strength of Talonite. Since this would be carried IWB, it needs to be low profile, even in a kydex sheath. I'd like the knife to be thin in the handles, but I am not just looking for a neck knife to carry from my belt. I definitely don't want bare handles; I need something to grip (G10 or CF preferable). 3.5-4.5" blade.

Tom Mayo works in Talonite and I think he still makes the occasional fixed blade. Kit Carson will make you a Stellite fixed blade. I'm not sure what the wait time would be from either of these makers.

Tom Mayo and Kit Carson aren't taking orders.

Darrel Ralph uses Talonite and Stellite and he makes some awesome fixed blades. I'm not sure if he uses this type of material on his fixed blades.

A suggestion. . . . .Greg Lightfoot, Randy Doucette or post a thread in the Makers Forum here.

Tom Krein has also worked in Talonite and Stellite 6K in the past. Drop him a line; he has quite a few models in the size you're looking for.

why don't you just get a Camillus Talon ? Handle in VG10, versatile kydex sheath, talonite blade, Rob Simonich design... Got pics if you want. And knife too.

I will second the recommendation of Tom Krein. He makes a great knife, he still takes orders, and he is willing to do most if not all of his models in 6K or Talonite as long as you are willing to pay the added cost for it. From prices that he has quoted me before, I would estimate that one of his knives costs about 50% more if it is done from 6K or Talonite instead of plain steel.

i have owned at least a dozen or so talonite/stellite fixed blades

currently own two. i use them as fishing blades. they are easy to sharpen and keep a useful edge for a long time. they are easier to chip than steel blades though and they will feel a bit "heavy" compared to steel blades
