Whatever happened to the much hyped talonite blades from a while back?? Was that all it was, hype?? Does anybody ever use talonite anymore??

Tom Mayo still uses 6K, Stellite. The price has recently gone up, and it's difficult to grind, so not many makers use it. There's definitely others besides Tom Mayo. I want to say Todd Rexford uses it, still, and there's some Strider customs in it.

Trace Rinaldi has a 6.5 blade offering in talonite right now.

Talonite is a great material for certain applications.

Reese Weiland will grind it on request.

We still get lots of requests for Talonite. The problem is the devaluation of the US dollar.

Talonite is made is Asia. As the value of the dollar has decreased the price of Talnote increased. About two years ago the price increased to the point where it is too expensive so we stopped buying it.

Some knifemakers still have billets of Talonite. If you want a knife made from it ask around.

bearcut is exactly right. The reverse of his statement is just as true. Talonite is the wrong material when used incorrectly. Match the blade material to the intended use.

I was wondering about better steels for leather cutting applications, especially round knives, awls, and swivel knives. Talonite came to mind because of its lubricity and wear resistance. Awls in particular seemed like they might benefit. Any comments would be appreciated.
