tama hagane

http://www.misugidesigns.com/yataiki3.html

IIRC it's very hard to get it, even in japan, because there is very little use for this steel. Remember that this is steel made from iron ore found in sand.

Trying to make tamahagane is like trying to make aluminium yourself from Bauxite

I don't think it's a wise decision to try to make a inpure steel from iron holding sand found in Japan. But iirc there is still one factory that produces this type of steel. They sell it solely thru http://www.nbthk.net/ to traditional Japanese swordsmiths.

No offense , but there are better, modern and purer steels available with the same characteristics as tamahagane. Due to their pureness you will get much better results then trying to do it "the old way".

You could try to make your own tamahagane by using "black sand", some high iron contents sand can be readely found near rivers. Try to smelt it and purify it untill you get a lump of iron.

GOOD LUCK

Check out on Fogg's forum. He recently started a subforum related to steelmaking. bruce

Tai Goo sells black sand for this purpose and on the Primal Fires forums you will find the information your looking for. :)

thanx for the answers everyone, just for interest sake at the moment as i live in a block of flats so i dont think the neighbours would be too appreciative of me setting up a foundry in the back yard (especially with the stuck up so and so that just moved in next door)
