I have been researching traditional Japanese tamahagane steel. I want to make a traditional katana out of some tamahagan, but odviously it's very hard to get as there are only 2 traditional producers left in JAPAN. I want the traditional stuff because it gives the sword a great pattern, and other than bloom steel, is there any other way of getting that pattern with modern steel? Could I forge weld alternating layers of high carbon and low carbon? Any ideas???

"Great pattern " is due in great part to completely polish by HAND. The delicate structures are destroyed by any power tool !
