Hello ladies and gents.

I've purchased a Tamang from Himalayan Imports recently.

I may give a more detailed review later (I assume they've been reviewed 5 or 6 hundred times, so no hurry, eh?). But first I'd like to say that I got it to be a companion to my axe. It's a tad over 18" from tip to pommel (I don't know if the blade length is measured from tip to bolster along the spine, along the edge, or tip to center of blade at the bolster, so I give the overall length).

So far, it's been the perfect companion for getting rid of anything too small and light for an axe to clear.

But I have a question on the sheath.
It has a pouch behind the belt loop. I assume this is a sort of survival pouch for fire tinder or something. Thing is, the loop is held in place with two knotted pieces of leather. Am I missing the way to get into the pouch, or am I supposed to untie the leather strips each time?

If the latter, is there an easy mod to do to allow it to open more quickly, without risking it self-opening and falling off my belt?

I am NOT a leatherworker, so if there's a mod, it has to be for the terminally ignorant to be able to accomplish.

Thanks.

The only way to access the pouch is to untie the leather straps. The only explanation i can think of as to why they were made this way, is that this is the traditional style sheath for the tamang. I believe that the part you are using for the belt loop is actually just a cover for the pouch and the rig is actually meant for sash style carry. I suppose one could make a proper frog for belt carry or email Auntie to see if she possibly has one laying around that might fit.
