Has anyone ever tried mat cutting with an AK47 or other busse sword? I'm considering doing it with my AK when my new Cheness Ko Katana arrives to have something to compare against.

The Cheness Ko Katana will out cut it, I bet.

But I would not recommend trying to abuse the Katana like you could with the Busse.

If you put a full height convex on the Busse (don't know the blade finish and edge you have on it) it will cut great, but won't be as tall edge to spine as the Ko Katana, I bet.

Honestly, with how cost effective it is getting to produce really great looking Japanese style blades, I am thinking of getting into some entry level ones!

BF, that's exactly what i'm doing right now. I have a tendency to stick to "tough" blades, but finding a decent quality katana for only $80 including shipping (musashi) made getting my first one very easy. It's not amazing quality, but it is quite well built, and works well above the price point.

I just bought a Cheness Yamakami Ko Katana because I liked the Musashi so much I wanted to see what a better quality blade could do. It's made of through hardened 9260 so it should be very tough (as much as the geometry will allow) and it still cost under $250 shipped.

I'm going to do some cutting with my AK and the katana side by side, and post pictures (or video if my wife will record).

Once i've beat on it a little and messed up the pretty coating, i'm planning to have NorCalBlacktail put a full height satin finish on it. I've already convexed the edge, and it shaves effortlessly, so it should still cut pretty well...

It would be fine. You can cut tameshigiri mats with broad swords so the ak47 would do it.

Would a japanese handle feel better - most likely. Would a japanese blade geometry cut better than a standard ak47 - most likely.

You won't hurt the AK47 so I'd love to see your experiences.

I'm guessing the AK47 will do very well at this...

I have thought about this, too. I may have to order some mats and start practicing with the ak until the butaniku shows up.

Its been done. Matteo Hays, or Escobar has done it I believe. Eric please stand up:thumbup:

I would love to see an AK47 with a traditional Japanese blade geometry, test cutting. It would be hard to beat.

I dropped a ten ich inch diameter tree with no prob in about 15 minutes with my ak, i connot see mats being a problem.

I've also thought about trying this with my Rucki and Waki.

I would be afraid to cut anything with the sub-300 dollar "katanas" though. Those always make me think of the home shopping network guy.

Bricks, bowling pins and street signs seam to be no problem for the AK, so some mats should be like budda :)

Mats are all about technique. I mean yes a sharp blade with ideal geometry is better, but I've seen a mat cut with a blunted blade.
If any of you ever get the chance to closely examine real katana you would be amazed at how thin they are and absolutely svelte. I have a custom shobu Kat I would put against anything this side of a light sabre and its just 1070 thru hardened. But I have no doubt a AK in the right hands would make me look like a little girl with a butter knife.

I think you'll like the Yama Ko Kat, I was very impressed with the waki. I would definitely remove the coating and polish the blade of the AK if you want to use it for mat cutting (the less resistance the better). The Yama should out cut the AK in mats....but the AK will no doubt prevail in cutting down trees and general mayhem.

The AK is my general purpose SHTF blade. It's the one i'll be grabbing if i have to head for the hills. The Ko Kat is more a toy for me. I want to increase my handling skills and would like to try my hand at mat cutting with something a little better than my Musashi, but if it came time for "serious social discord" it would most likely be handed off to a friend in favor of my AK.

I would love to try it. It has to be easier than cutting down a 16 inch diameter tree with a Waki. :p
