I managed to get hold of one of these today. The handle is Tan in colour and it has an inscription on the blade relating to Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Does anyone know the story behind this knife? Which troops was it issued to, how many were issued etc. etc.

If you need a picture I'll see what I can do.

Hey, I would like to know if you don't mind how you acquired your spyderco tan native. Just curious... are you in the collector's program?

Greetings~
When I asked about the tan Natives I was informed that they were produced for our troops and would not be available for sale to the general public. The only other people who would be receiving them were those in the collectors club. Spyderco employees were allowed to purchase a few also. I bought two myself. One is for a very dear family member who is on his way to Iraq.
If you are in the service I would try contacting Spyderco and asking them how you can go about getting one:

Spyderco
820 Spyderco Way
Golden, Colorado 80403

You can also use this address/phone number to inquire about Spyderco's Collector Club.

Hope this helps.
Aloha~

Hi Guys. Skyharbor is correct in that they were only available to our troops, but at this time, they are available ONLY to our troops in the Middle East.

I'm sorry, but at this time, you will not be able to get one in the USA, even if you are military. My apologies.

Hey Sal, I hope you won't ban us from the collector's program if we say we already acquired one of these lil beauties! ;) I happened to find someone who was willing to part with one a week or two back that was a collector or at least a dealer that had another one to sell off per say. Don't know if that was the intent or what with it but I cherish this native as part of my personal collection... my dad was over ther first time we had a conflict with them with the 101st Airborne out of FT. Campbell. Anyhow, I was just curious if the person who started this post was a collector or not... and how they acquired one all the way in South Africa. Well, I guess the cat is out of the bag on how I acquired mine. :) (member of 'Keep Sal in business fanclub...')

Thanks Sal for clearing this up. I can't say where I am ..(OPSEC) but that good to know!

As mentioned, collectors were able to purchase one each. This is in keeping with our agreement to collectors. Spyderco employees purchased about 15 or 20. It would be through those two channels that I imagine any "odd" pieces in the US would have come from.

We do have collectors in South Africa.
