Leaving for a week up to the Oregon coast. Usually we are camping and fishing, and I take an appropiate array of Spydercos to match the tasks expected. Moran, Military, Starmate, or Wayne Goddard LW
This time we are closing escrow on a house and doing a final walk-through and crawl-through to check the termite repairs that were done.
I am taking the plainedged Calypso Jr and my brand new large serrated Calypso. Both are micarta handled and I find I really like micarta. It is a sensual material.
The Calypso is a large, fullbodied solid feeling knife. I think it will handle any heavier work I might run into on this trip. I am very happy I grabbed one of these before they are discontinued. The two knives have an almost custom look when held together and seem to be a natural task-oriented pair. 2 pockets--2 knives

I think your choice is a great one. The Calypso design is great for utility. I wany to get my hands on a plain large Calypso before they are all gone.

Just a word on these two and how I fared using them. That word is, great!!

I used the plain edge Jr for testing the apples on our new trees, (pretty good) and scraping and opening a couple walnuts from same. Opened a few boxes in the presence of non-knifenuts with no sharp intakes of breath.

It did fail me on one test, tho. I was given the task of cleaving one of those petrified pig's ears into equal parts for our two dogs. Its plain edge slid back and forth on the hard smooth almost plastic-like surface of the dried and smoked pig-leather ear. I went to my left pocket and the big serrated edge on the Calypso went halfway thru on the forward stroke, finished it on the return. I again went to the large Calypso when pushing, cutting my way thru overgrown brush to view a fallen tree on our water storage tank up the creek, no I didn't cut up the tree with it

butt it did score some branches for easier breaking to clear the path.

I am really taken with this combo, I like the two knife, two edge theory a lot. I have more appreciation now for the Spyderedge also as used on a large blade. I am seriously considering trading my plainedged Military for a serrated one.

And one person noticed the two gold spyders on the black clips. Classy indeed.

Chinook,

Your pair of Calypsos are handsome set. I can appreciate both the utility of the two edge idea and the beauty of matched micarta and gold spyders. I also feel AC's desire for a big Calypso before they are all gone.

What really caught my eye was your newfound appreciation of a larger serrated edge.

I also discovered this after getting a serrated Military. I've always had a preference for plain edges...even a prejudice against fully serrated blades....until I discovered how much more easily they handle my tougher cutting chores. The serrated Military IS my outdoor work knife.

I need a smaller sized plainedge for plainedge tasks... I'm thinking I'll get a Calypso Jr. lt.wt. What do you think of the Calypso's steel (VG10)?

regards

Well, I was just checking and the Calypso will scrape hairs off my arm if I hit them right. I haven't sharpened it yet. It popped hairs at any angle when I got it. I think that it held up well to the hard use I put it to.
It has a unique sub-texture or visible pattern that is only apparent under strong light. This was noted in another thread and described as almost a liquid wave pattern. Not objectionable at all and can not be felt on the polished satin outer surface at all.
VG10's corrosion and stain resistance are one reason its used on the Spydie Moran and by Fallkniven in their products. I have two of the mirror finished (no 'wave' pattern) Morans (actually the wife grabbed the first one) and they are joys to use and still sharp and shiney after their camp duty. The wife now buys whole chickens instead of parts just so she can use the Moran and remarks on it everytime she cuts one up.
I think the plainedged Calypso Jr LTWT would be an xlnt companion to your serrated Military.

(and of course I "love" the scales)
