Hey everyone, I have picked up a small bag of scraps by Tandy Leather from another craft store (no local leather store) and noticed that there is almost no information about the material on the package. Does anyone know if it is Veg tanned or Chrome tanned? I am looking to add a small leather patch to my gunsmithing mat for when drifting out/in pins and may try a small folder sheath as well. I know chrome tanned will destroy carbon steel in short order, but at the moment, it would more or less be just proof of concept that I can make a usable sheath. Although I dont want to ruin my knife/knives.

Don't know for sure...
But, I picked up some scraps in my local Tandy store just two days ago and the sign above the box said "veg tanned". Not sure about what you picked up though.

Chrome tanned leather is usually floppy, pre dyed, and has a soft feel.

Veggie tanned leather is usually firm, not normally pre dyed from tandy,

One sure fire way to tell is a sample is chrome tanned or not is to take a small piece and burn it. Veggie tanned will turn black, chrome tanned will show a green or blue sheen.

Thanx for that little bit of knowledge, I will try the burn test when I get home.

It is one of their bags sold by weight, and most if not all of it is dyed (havent opened it yet), although some of the larger pieces are quite stiff. I guessing more than likely it is mixed between the two. I am sure I can find plenty of uses for most of it, besides it was cheap.

You are very welcome. :)

Some of the pre dyed stuff is what they call "hot stuffed" that means its been drum dyed with a mixture of wax and dye, makes for a really nice water resistant finish, but I really wouldn't trust it completely.

burn that leather. :D some smells good, others smell awful. I got in trouble with the wife once so I know by experience. :p

Good to know. The wife usually says the same thing about me and how I smell after work, sometimes good and sometimes aweful! And my wife isn't usually to surprised by "funny" smells coming from the garage...
