I am having problems with these snaps. I keep blowing through the cap (the female part of the snap)on the snap. I use the included anvil but just can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I just finished an axe sheath(posted in show off your leather) today and ended using the other post to finish cause i blew out all the other caps. Any help would be appreciated.
Also are there better snaps available somewhere else? I am also looking for snaps that have a post sticking up rather than a buttom, These are smaller in size than the line 24 snaps. Thanks guys, Mike

Gotta pic? I'm having trouble visualizing what your trying to explain.

I curious to see what they look like as well, I use Tandy's snaps exclusively and have never had a problem with them.

I'll try to explain it better, I am not to good with the camera. There are post1 and snap1 and post 2 and snap2. I consider post2 the finished part of the snap assembly, the part that would be exposed on the sheath.
Snap 2 goes over post2 and gets peen over with the tool. When I try to do this post2 doesn't peen or rollover right and actually goes thru snap 2. It is like i drive it right thru the metal. I hope that helps i know it isn't a very good description. Thanks again, Mike

Above is an exploded view of a line 24 snap. The dome (far left) is what I think your driving the post through or dimpling it?
If that is the case then you have a faulty anvil, ie the recess in the anvil isnt large enough to allow the dome to sit firmly in the bottom of the recess. I see that dimpling a lot and is always a result of a poor anvil or using none at all. The setter is partly to blame as well, if its not made well or is the wrong size it wont flare the post properly.

Here is a you tube tutorial on snap setting, he is using the same setter that I have. Note please! How he is wiggling the setter as he is setting the dome, this is crucial for a good flare. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6vS_CjRSlU&feature=related

If this didn't cover it, please let us know.

Third piece from left(Tandy instructions call it the socket and the fourth piece the cap) is what blows through. The stud sticking off the fourth piece doesn't dimple right and pushes through the third piece. I'll check out the video and appreciate the help.

I sometimes have a problem when the leather I'm using is too thick and the stud sticking up from the 4th piece isn't long enough to peen over well enough to hold the 3rd piece. Time for a little skivving.....
Spike, see if things work better on a thinner piece of leather just for grins.

I have found sometimes I get a "bad batch" of Tandy line 24 snaps that gives me a similar problem. The top cap post will not roll down over itself properly and ends up ruining the top half of the snap. My husband made me a small tool to gently spread the top cap post out slightly (flare it). That way, when I use the tandy tools to set it, the post rolls down properly. Since I never knew which snaps would have this problem, I just use the tool on every snap. It only takes a second. My "success" rate with these snaps went from about 60% to over 95%. I can post photos of the tool if you are interested.

Another thing that helped me overall with setting these snaps is to put the small concave anvil on top of Tandy's mini-anvil. That allows me to set the snap with fewer hits and made the overall process much easier.

Walkbyfaith, thats kinda what it seems like just a bad batch, I had no problems with the first and second pieces. I watched the video and will try the rolling of the setting tool. I am also going to order that setting tool and anvil from Tandy or Jantz if they have it.
Rayban, I am using 8/9oz leather, the post stick out plenty, Just user error.
Thanks again to everyone

I did the same thing..I made one from 3/8" O1 drill rod..looks like a lathe center..Flares the throat out enough that the tool rolls it down correctly..I use to have the same problem until i made that tool..

Good info here! :)

That first little flare of the post is the hardest part, I use a nice heavy strike first and then roll the tool around a few times as I hit it and haven't had a messed up snap in a very long time.

Now, that I said that, somehow I bet I will have a rash of goobers. :o

I got it! I tried starting them with a center punch and then rolled the tool as I was setting the snap.
Thanks!!! to all of you for your help.
