tang length

is there a way to anticipate the length of a hidden tang without opening / damaging the handle? ( excpet for x ray)

Magnet dont seem to work. Some tangs might be too short to work with.

I wonder if one of those hi tech stud finders would work. I've never used them because I use the knuckle method to find the studs in the walls.
