what are they made of? Are they made of something harder than the handles so that the handles still deform to the pin or vise versa. just curious it'll be awhile before I can ask mine.

I think that last question is something that time will tell. I have not seen anyone say one way or the other. I would imagine eventually, given enough time and use, that either the handle or the tang pin would start to give and the knife would become loose. But again, how long that is depends on the use of the knife and materials involved. I haven't seen anyone post "I wore out my 42" yet, so I would doubt it will be a big problem.

Actually there have been a few posts about tang pins coming out.

Doubt is an uncomfortable condition,
but certainty is a ridiculous one.

The tang pin is loose on my 42. It was loose a couple of days after I bought it new. I will send it in if it falls out or damages the handles, but so far it still works great.

Two benefits of the 42 over the 45 are:

1. The tang pin is bigger on the 42.

2. The handles of the 42 are Ti.

The force of the tang hitting the handles is spread out over a larger area with the 42 because of the larger tang pin. Due to this you will not see the handles wearing out so soon.

Also, the Ti is a much harder metal and can take more abuse before showing any signs of wear.

The combination of the two will make your 42 stand up to a lot more and last longer.

After a few months of heavy use on my 45, I could see the areas that the tang was wearing into the handles. It was mostly on the safe handle, because that is the one you are holding most often and takes the most force. On my 42's however, I treat them worse than I ever did with my 45 and they are holding up very well.

It is of course a disposable product, which means that eventually, with enough wear and tear, you may need to dispose of it and get a replacement.

Just a tought ..

Won't they make the tang pin not round but maybe () so that with the minimum thickness it has more surface for pressure distribution ..

I've actually wondered for a while why not have a rectangular or ovoid tang pin to spread the force affecting the handles.
