How do all the bali makers around finish your tang pins?
like after peening them, how do you clean them up and make them nice and round again?
TIA Steve.

the pins I mean are the exposed ones peened into the blade for the handles to hit. :)
most that I have seen have the pins about 1/8th high on either side of the blade and always look better than what I can manage to do. it almost looks like they are finished out on a lathe, but mine look like crap...
I tried chucking up different things in my drill press and holding the pins (while already in the blade) into it, I've come close to looking ok, but still not quite right. :barf: ;)
there must be some kind of trick to it

Hi

i gotcha now.... you could solder them in....or even us JB weld.....

i'm not sure but i don't think those are peened....... i'd use a very tight friction fit.. ... remember that your drill bits like to drill over size...

did you see this patent....... maybe theres a clue in there...

click on the "images" section to see the drawings..

anyhow... that bout all i know on that ..... hopefully others will chime in

you might consider spinning the pins with exposed ends....like a slipjoint maker does the center pin that goes through the liners and handle material. I could be wrong as I don't make Bali's but do make slipjoints...

Hope it helps...might contact a maker who does Bali's....maybe Darrel Ralph?
He's is a good guy and would surely share what he does on Butterflies.

It took me a while, but I knew I saw the gadget you're looking for.

Look at the online catalog for Texas Knifemakers supply. Under the index they list a "Head Spinner" It looks like that's the exact job this it's made for.

You could just peen it prior to putting it in tthen chuck in your and round out 1/8" off easc end leaving the center slightly thicker.then just press it in with a vice.
