Hey all,

I'm thinking about making a bowie and can't decide between a full tang and a hidden tang. What is your preference and why. Keep in mind that this will be my third knife my first being a full tang and second being a hidden tang. Thanks

Chris

No preference with me. Both styles offer a variety of different options when finishing off the handles.

I prefer the look of a hidden tang.
I think it looks more elegant and more 'hand made'.
Just my two cents

With a Bowie, you have both choices. Most will have a hidden tang. Some styles are naturals for a full tang.If it is your third knife,I would suggest a full tang.

Depends on style and material availible. Also depends somewhat on tools at hand. A hidden tang needs less in the way of tooling than a full tang. It can also be somewhat stronger than a full tang, is more resitant to moister than a full tang, and in a larger knife insulates the hand from shock better during prolonged use.

That said either will work and can make excellent knives. My personal preferance is for a hidden tange be cause there is less to go wrong with it than a full tang and is somewhat easier for me to do. But then there are styles that I like that just begs for a full tang.

In the end, your choice.

Thanks all, I think I might go with a hidden tang because I find it the most daunting of the two. If I go with the hidden tang, do you guys drill a vent hole in the handle for the air to escape when you pour in the epoxy? I didn't do it with the last one and I'm wondering if I should have as the tutorial I was using suggested it.

Tang preference? I like the original orange flavor the astronauts took to the moon. I don't know anything about this "hidden tang" Is that like Pepsi clear? and "full tang" I can only assume that is a meal replacement?

You sau you are making a Bowie, Is this some sort of wholestic zen approach to knife making? Your breakfast beverage determines what kind of blade you will make?

Edited to add more gratutious stupidity.

Hi Need2, I don't drill a vent hole, I just leave about 1/8"-1/16 slack, bigger hole than tange for epoxy gripping room and then pour in the epoxy, and wet the tang with epoxy and stick the two together. The extra room lets excess epoxy escape without hydrolicly putting pressure on the handle and posibly splitting it. A real real tight fit could cause the handle to split without a vent.
