Tang question

I picked up a used 12" AK type locally, (cheap), I think it's from KH, anyway the handle (wood) is not up to HI standards, is small, and I'm thinking of replacing it.
The tang tip is the standard, peened over the butt plate. I'm guessing you need to grind the peen off to take the handle apart, but then you are already shortening a already too short tang.
Any suggestions on the usual procedure for replacing a handle for a situation like this?
Maybe a hidden tang that's riveted through the new handle?
Thanks in advance, George.

I went ahead and moved this thread because it isn't technically about an HI blade. No big deal:)

Anyway, the experts will be along shortly, I'm sure. I think a hidden tang with a pin through the handle might be the way to go. Many khuks made in Nepal simply have a burned in tang held in with laha, and they last for years before they get loose. If you set the tang as deep as you can, cement it with epoxy, and put a small pin through the handle, then I can't imagine that the blade would work itself loose anytime soon.

Good luck!
