I recently acquired a Model 14 which was described as a "cut-down tang version"...could someone explain exactly what this term refers to? (I'm hesitant to break the handle open and look :) )

As you probably know, the tang is the metal that makes up part of, or is contained within the handle.

The models #14, #15, # 16, and #17 (knives by RMK) are 'Full Tang' knives, where the exposed tang makes up part of the handle...

More information can be seen here... http://www.randallmadeknives.com/military.asp

While a detail view of a 'Cut Down Tang' (CDT) RMK can be seen here... http://www.randallmadeknives.com/knifeconstruction.htm

Most RMK's are actually CDT's, but the term 'Cut Down Tang' is only used on the models #14 & #15, to differentiate these knives from the 'Full Tang' models.

Hope that helps,

Mel

Thank you, Mel...now that I've seen pictures it is all perfectly clear...similar to what some makers/manufacturers call a "hidden tang" :)
