some "older" Schrade knives are stamped: SCHRADE/U.S.A.; and others: SCHRADE/N.Y. U.S.A. my assumption is that those with N.Y. are older. can knives be dated based on these stamps ? thanks for any help. roland

Look in the collectors of schrades link and all the info is there, or search the forum there was a lot of talk about that not too long ago. -Joel

actually i tried searching "tang stamps" in forum and threads but came up with very little. i'll try again. roland

roland look under the second thread down from the top and click on the link that says collectors of schrades r us or something like that if you look around in there it will give ya a bunch of history. you may have to look around but look under the history part and that should expalin it. if ya cant find it let us know and we'll give ya some more help.-Joel

i just tried search for "tang stamp" in both stickies, and both times all i got was a blank screen. so, what's a better search word ? roland

i have read most of collectors-of Schrades-r-us during the past 2 weeks, but still don't find a reference to tang stamps. a confounding factor is the only internet connection where i live is very slow (much slower than regular dial-up), so to download some of those articles takes 10 (or at times even more)minutes. so if i need to cross reference back to another page, etc., i can't get that much done in an evening.
i have read a lot of posts in this forum, but have yet to find a thread about tang stamps, other than in mention to a particular knife.

There are few hard and fast rules for the Schrade tangstamps. However, generally speaking, your assumption is correct, post 1972-73 knives might have N.Y. in the stamp, but later ones do not. Roughly mid to late seventies they dropped the N.Y. from the stamps. Generally, the stamps were used until they were used up. And blades in inventory were assembled until they ran out. And knives were shipped until orders were filled. And sold by dealers until they were gone. So the best we can do, other than a few limited editions and other SFO short runs, it a rough idea of a chronology.

Looking back, it would have been nice if they had done a date code of some sort, but they didn't. Their idea of serializing even ran afoul of high production eventually and was discontinued except on the previously mentioned special knives. And even then, it was not unusual to find a serial well over the advertised number to be produced due to rejects and replacements.

Michael, thanks for helping me out. my Schrade collection is now up to about 10, and i am becoming interested in older, NIB knives (i.e., I'm becoming a "real" collector), all thanks to the interest developed from being part of this forum. one day i hope to have enough accurate knowledge, so that i may be the one helping others.
when i have enough of these knives (many unique in some aspect; i've been reading the "fine" details), i will make a photo display with info. of interest. (which i will post from a location with hi-speed). thanks again Michael, i feel like i owe you a debt; like maybe 1 of the 3 897UH's i have coming. roland

Roland,
If there is an article that you would like a copy of that just seems not to download let me know and I'll send you a compressed/zipped version that just might make it easier.
I do have a list of tang stamps and best guesses on there years of use which I'll see if I can dig up.
Now that my daughters wedding is over (everything was great) I can get a bunch of mailings out and start working on the fun stuff again. I owe many folks apoligies for my tardy responses.
Thanks for hanging in there and not hanging me.

thanks orvet, that's what i was looking for. one final question here: have tang stamps changed for the post 2004 USA made knives ? could you tell an "03 knife from same model in '05, from the tang stamp ? (or any other way if box is not present ?)

A 05 model would be Taylor made. Look for a China stamp on the back of the main blade and or the lack of a USA tang stamp.
Allmost all Schrades made in the US were stamped as such.

IRV, what about the post 2004 USA (SMKW) made Schrades ? are only certain patterns being made in the US right now ? and, is their tang stamp:SCHRADE/USA/pattern number ?
