I've got a question that I haven't been able to find an answer for in previous threads. When in it's history did Schrade Cut. Co stamp its knives with only the initials: S.C. Co
WALDEN ?

Eric

PS The Walden is supposed to be under the initials, but it won't save that way when I post.

The info that I have says that tang stamp was used from 1910 until approximately 1946.

I hope that helps,
Dale

I have only seen that stamp (initials only) on a few barlow patterns, pre WWII bone handled examples.

I wish there were an ehaustive illustrated guide to the Schrade tangstamps, but there is not that I am aware of. I have two of John Goins books, one copyright 1982, the other copyright 1998, and neither give many illustrations of the Schrade marks, or differentiate between dates, other than the broad statement "c 1904-1946". I don't have his last book, so maybe it is more comprehensive on Schrade marks.

The illustration chart published on page 30 in the June, 2004 issue of Knife World shows the mark in question, but dates it "1910's-1946?". Is that a Levine chart?

I just looked at Catalog E & Supplements from 1926-1938 and without fail, all marks that can be seen are:
SCHRADE
CUT. CO.
WALDEN,NY.

So that is of little help.

The article was written by B.K. Brooks and published in Knife World in June 2004. I met him at a show last year. He had quite a collections of Schrades (for display only, not for sale) including a number of wire jacks.

Hopefully I won't get sued into oblivion for this, but for those of you who don't have access to other sources, here's an excerpt from the Knife World article by B.K.Brooks, June '04.

The Tang stamp chart was quite wide, so I cut it in two, so it's out of order, but you'll get the info.
The best thing would be to order a back issue from Knife World, as there are TWO articles on Schrade in that issue. While you are at it, subscribe to it, as it's the only true collector's magazine. I sit by my P.O.box waiting for mine!!

thanks for that Charlie, I printed it off for future reference, I have a notebook full of this type of material, but was missing a stamp chart for schrade, ye haw!

same here, been looking high and low!!! i use the tang stamp 99% of the time to judge what i buy. if i could just find one gem mint with logo #1...

Thanks guys, as usual that was way more info than I expected! I hope I can reciprocate sometime.

Keep in mind that while that chart is very helpful, it is far from complete, and the dates are quite general. Note, please, that I did not say it was wrong. I often wish someone like Mr. Goins had taken an interest specifically in ISC knives, and done an exhaustive study of the stamps, fully illustrated and annotated. Perhaps some day someone will. It will take someone with far more knowledge, resources, and time than myself for sure. As a quick example of what I mean, someone who has a 41OT, show us a closeup of the reverse (left) tangstamp, and someone with a Walden OT slipjoint do the same.
