Tang Stamp

I have assumed (which in itself is not wise with Schrades) that an original Schrade Walden made in 1973 would generally be stamped Schrade / Walden / NY USA and the pattern number would be stamped on the back. For the most part, I have found that to be true.

I have two Schrade Walden 861 Open Stock Knives, one is loose, the other came in a tube, marked Schrade Walden and 861 on the cardboard insert. Both have the identical stamp, as mentioned above. The tubed one has Schrade Walden engraved on the shield, the other has just Schrade. Not surprising, I have some examples of other patterns with engraved shields, some are blank.

According to the catalogs, the Schrade Open Stock 861 was listed in the 1973, but not the 1974 pricelist. I recently came across 4 - 861's, in the tubes, tubes marked Schrade Walden, shields marked Schrade. when I opened them, I was surprised they are stamped Schrade / NY USA / 861.

I probably make a bigger deal out of tang stamps than necessary, but it made me laugh. If I have any knives stamped Schrade / NY USA, I figured they were 1974 or older. I would have thought all 861's were stamped Schrade Walden. With these 4, I don't know what to figure. They are all very nice stockman, only flaw a little dried grease stain on some of the blades.

Anyone else have an 861 that is not stamped Schrade Walden?
