Tangs?

I'm going to order my first Khukuri in the very near future, but i have a couple of questions. I was looking at either a WWII or an AK, but then i saw the Chiruwa Ang Khola. Is the tang on the Chiruwa Ang Khola full length and width, and does it really make any difference?

On another note, i would like to introduce myself by telling you all why i decided to buy from HI. I've been lurking around this forum for a while, reading up on the philosophy behind HI and hearing all of the wonderful stories about Yangdu, Uncle Bill and the kamis, and i knew that this was a company with which i would love to do business. the community here seems like a wonderful one, and i look forward to hopefully becoming a part of it!

Welcome. Being fairly new myself, I marvel at the warmth and welcoming nature of the forumites here. Their warmth, like the HIKV has infected me.
I can't speak for the Ang Khola, but my WWII feels almost alive in my hands, and I see why Bandoists favor it. Few water filled plastic bottles can stand its wrath.
But, face it. You're going to get both. That's just all there is to it. Just pick which one you want first and start cutting back on meals to afford the second. And then the third. I wanted "one good khukri" and somehow I'm waiting to buy the forth. I'm not sure, but I think Yangdu has some sort of magic enchantment on everyone who buys from HI.

Yes , the Churwa tang is full tang and is full width and length of the handle. arguably it could be considered stronger. The others are a rat-tail type tang peened at the buttcap and these are definately as strong as they come and more than you will ever need. Please take time to read thru the "First Khukuri-recommendations and Reasons" thread at the top of the page...it will answer many questions and if you have more, we'll be here to help.

Now my friend, you know why we all came here and roosted.
Nothing like a great company and great company!
Some have been here forever and some not so long....but we're all here for the same reason.

The Chiruwa handle is definitely stronger.
Now, will you ever be able to put enough stress on the blade to tell the difference? Probably not. And if you do, you're likely to break before the blade does (although some incidents of blade breakage have occurred.

I prefer the Chiruwa style handles, but not necessarily because of strength, it's just a personal preference.

Also the Chiruwa Ang Khola is not the only blade to have Chiruwa style handles. Mst of my HI blades have that style handle, including my WWII. If you really want a WWII (good all-purpose kukri) with a Chiruwa handle, email Yangdu and she may have one in stock, or she can have one made for you.

ETA: it's not really fair to call the standard handles, "rat tails", as they are extremely stout. Someone has a pic of one with the handle off. If they can post it, you'll see what I mean.

Welcome to the forum:) We always enjoy new faces:thumbup:

Is the chiruwa AK stronger? Arguably, yes it is. However, I like to equate the Chiruwa AK as needing an 800lb gorilla to break it where as the standard kangaroo/croc tail tang will generally only require a 700lb ape;)

Once again, welcome:)

I find the "rat tail" style more comfortable most of the time, especially for the mid-sized and smaller khuks. Chiruwa may give a better balance to larger blades..., like 18" and over, depending on the kami.

Welcome to the HI and forum

Welcome aboard and please let me confirm a few comments:

Don't spend too much time trying to pick your first Khuk, because as MD says, it will not stop at one.

Folks learning and sharing knowledge and often so much more, especially in the Cantina.

Oh Steely, you have gone from Rat to Roo to Croc ... a Dinosaur tail must be next and final revision would it not?;) :D
