Tank/Tractor treads

Hi Guys, I know of a place that has piles of treads from tractors. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what kinds of steel is used in them and if it is worth inquiring about hauling some home for forging. I really don't know much about them.
any help is appreciated -Ted
 
I believe that they are a casted steel,And won't work for a knife blade...They may work in a Damascus mix,or for guards and buttcaps...
I would suggest that you get one and try it before you get a whole bunch of them and find that they won't work...

You might try the pins which connect the links. There was a thread a while back on using pins from Cat crawler tracks. I would imagine they are all about the same.

Try one out if the price is right!
